oil pick up position

I just put my stock oil pan on my 440 Source stroker motor. I used putty to get the pickup at about 1/4" above the pan bottom. No problems. The issue is that the edge of the pickup is right against the oil drain hole. It may make draining the oil a bit slower, but probably ok. It just seems odd. It is the replacement "stock" pick up from 440 Source and does not seem much different from the old stock one. I cannot compare perfectly, because the old one got twisted.

Anyone have a similar problem?

Stock pick up should rest on the floor of the pan. That's the reason for the lower cover. It can vibrate and potentially snap off. With a non baffled pan it can be uncovered with hard acceleration that's why it is all the way at the back by plug.
 
This is like the OEM, but not an duplicate. So, I do not know if that applies or not. I would think that snapping must be because of some weak point with the OEM. Not sure if mine has that same problem. I have been using Svendsen's MOPAR book, which I find as one of the better books for a rebuild. He says to put it 1/4" - 3/8" off the floor for the type I have. I'll try that, since I used a windage tray and I won't get in to the floor without some bending anyway.

For it being back by the plug, that is good to know. I wasn't sure. Thanks for the response.
 
I see what looks like metal shavings around the radius of the hole, be sure the clean all that stuff off as you do not want any of that to get in the engine. Soap and water and a good bristle brush and pat dry.

If it is a open screen type pick up it should not touch the floor of the pan.
The factory style pick up with the screen partially covered by a baffle is designed to rest on the floor of the pan. It stabilizes the pickup from vibration at high RPM (since it is long and screwed directly in the block, instead of curved and on the oil pump). The baffle is aimed to keep it covered on acceleration.
