68" Voltage Regulator Upgrade?

I would like to upgrade the voltage regulator to I think 71 plus year unit. I am rebuilding my 68' 300 and replaced the alternator with a new one which is 3 wire. I admit I did not check with what was in the car, but what was in the car, as much is, is unknown to be original. I would like to attach an electronic (flat) regulator with the existing alternator which I believe to be (original) 60-65 amps on the passenger side firewall. QUESTION: are these affected by heat and if so, is location critical and any other considerations I should be aware of? Thanks
 
Not sure if this will help, but I bought an electronic one for my 68 Fury that looks like the old mechanical type.
 
I assume that the "new" alternator is a dual feed alternator, which will require you to ground one terminal in order to use it with a stock type voltage regulator or the one that I sell (link below). I sell a solid state voltage regulator that would be a direct bolt in for the stock '68 style voltage regulator currently in your car.

On the '70 & up MOPARS with the three wire voltage regulator they were mounted near the wiper motor on the upper portion of the firewall. They should be away from direct engine heat.

The stock alternator for your '68 Chrysler was likely a 37 amp unit unless you had A/C or a heavy duty charging system in which case the alternator would be around 45 amps.

If you are going to use a 60 amp or higher alternator I STRONGLY recommend that you upgrade the wiring in the charging circuit and bypass the alternator gauge in the dash to avoid an electrical fire.

The '70 & up style voltage regulator is a great unit if you get a quality part but if you want a stock appearance you would need to hide it somewhere away from direct heat.

+1 for the FURYGT regulator. and everything he said. upgrade your whole charging circuit. and all you have to do is ground 1 wire out to ALT body like he said. there is a pic of mine done up here somewhere in this forum. somewhere.

Here's my 68 Newport Custom..
Powermaster 78 amp "roundback" alternator.
You can see the purple wire grounded to the housing for the extra field.
Wells/Durolast VR706 electronic voltage regulator with NOS cover over it.
Looks stock but no longer the point type regulator.
My wiring has been upgraded with Bulkhead bypass,Ammeter gauge shunt both with fusible links.
Headlight harness has two relays redirecting the high draw away from the electricals.
This regulator does not require any wiring modifications,direct fit.
Very reliable and I had no issues using them for years on many cars in the past.
