What is this a mount for?

I've seen different things under the hoods of cars, but what is this for? The square plate where and AC compressor would go.

My guess is an aftermarket AC compressor. Anyone actually know from experience?

Your guess is correct. It was to mount a ford style compressor on the engine.

You are correct sir. An aftermarket A/C system, like the old Mark IV systems, used the square Ford style York compressor. There was a place here in Pittsburgh, Harry Survis, that installed a lot of those systems over the years. BTW you can now get those Mark IV under dash units if you want to add A/C to your ride. It's not a factory set up but it would be period correct.

The bolt pattern might be the same as York AC compressors, used on AMC's. If you want to resurrect the original AC system, check salvage yards for AMC's with AC.

You can still buy a brand new York compressor with almost any pulley/clutch combo. They are still in service on trucks.
