A return to Auschwitz, 75 years after liberation

While stationed in Germany, I drove the roads of Poland on Night of the Dead . The small towns experienced electrical brown outs, but continuing on those narrow roads beams of light, lit the sky from massive amounts of candles in the graveyards. A few miles outside of Krakow the air is filled with a familiar smell with no good memories attached, yes, I could still smell it. Walking thru the gates that read "work makes you free" and visiting the various cells, the ovens, where I sat, and stories told made the hair on my neck stand up. An overwhelming experience, I will never forget. I made this post to pass along to the next generation, as we have some younger members on this site.

Thank you for posting this. Unfortunately, we are losing the few people we have left that experienced this first hand too fast. Plus, you have your outer fringe groups that say this was all fabricated. Just too sad to think someone would actually believe that.

He who does not learn from history is bound to repeat it.

Thank you for sharing this epic time of history. My mother lived through this horrific time during her leaving Lithuania and making her way to the United States traveling across Poland, Germany and other countries, the stories she told us and the things that she witnessed, experienced first hand and survived to share with us is beyond the pale of what most people can ever even comprehend never alone see. Again THANK YOU FOR SHARING !!!!!!!

whenever i'm having a hard day at work, i think of all the people who were worked to death as slave labor in Europe and Japan during WWII.

i got it okay.

It was called National Socialism for a reason. What the woke progressives are oblivious to is the cost associated with taking their collectivist socialist ideology to its ultimate conclusion. There is no example of socialism when implemented where it hasn't resulted in disaster.
Socialism as a hate crime

I was stationed very close to Dachau Concentration Camp for 8.5 years in Augsburg. I also was close to the Flosenburg Concentration Camp also while I was stationed in Germany for 15.5 years.

I walked thru Dachau a few years ago. A very grey, cold day. What a sick time in world history. After reading Unbroken, I was so mad there was no way I could go see the movie. I am so proud of my Father who served in WWII, Korea and Viet Nam, Twice. What did Earl Pitts used to say? WAKE UP AMERICA!

The ramifications of Hitler's sickness are reverberating yet. Big powerful governments give the illness strength. They are to be feared, not venerated.

My high school German teacher really believed this did not happen!

I had a history teacher who made sure to drill that quote into our minds and ad to that by saying “ignore it at your peril”. Socialism, communism, fascism, whatever you call it, it’s statism. They all have one thing in common, the state takes control of most or all aspects of everyday life. Once in control, those that run the state will never give up that control and have the power to do whatever they want. That’s how Hitler, Stalin, Mao, and the Kims were able to kill so many people.

I think(?) I am one of those younger members to which you refer, but I'm pushing 40, so maybe not. I too appreciate you sharing this as my best friend/might-as-well-be brother is Jewish and his Grandfather was a Holocaust survivor. Because of that fact as well as me being somewhat of a student of history, I am glad you posted this.

A government should be afraid of it's people, not the other way around and as others have noted, the perils of national socialism have been on display for quite some time. It's amazing how many uneducated people there continue be in this world. All part and parcel to a soundbite generation. I wonder how many of these so-called socialist geniuses even know that the nazi party advocated for NATIONAL EFFIN SOCIALISM. Then again, what do I know? Most of what I know is self-taught and I stood for the pledge of allegiance.

The 1964 speech < Ronald Wilson Reagan < Presidents < American History From Revolution To Reconstruction and beyond

You and I are told we must choose between a left or right, but I suggest there is no such thing as a left or right. There is only an up or down. Up to man's age-old dream-the maximum of individual freedom consistent with order or down to the ant heap of totalitarianism. Regardless of their sincerity, their humanitarian motives, those who would sacrifice freedom for security have embarked on this downward path. Plutarch warned, "The real destroyer of the liberties of the people is he who spreads among them bounties, donations and benefits."

One of the greatest speeches given in the modern era.

It may be better to live under robber barons than under the omnipotent moral busybodies. The robber barons cruelty may sometimes sleep, his cupidity may at some point be satiated; but those who torment us for our own good will torment us without end, for they do so with the approval of their own conscience.”

C S Lewis Quote On Tyrannies

One of the greatest observations of our era.

I have also visited the Holocaust Museum in Washington D.C.

I highly recommend visiting this museum. It is an experience you won't ever forget!

I visited the Holocaust Museum in Saint Petersburg, Florida. I can only say it is a thought provoking experience, a whole flood of different emotions and thoughts at the same time. I do not feel one could truly feel what someone experienced as they arrived at the camps. The museum in Florida has one of the actual train cars that was used and one can only think of the emotions the millions of people felt as they descended into Hell from these rail cars.

Unfortunately, we can all stop and think of various situations around the world today this still happens in different forms. Plus all of the ways the media glosses over Socialism and white washes it, or re-packages it to make it sound good.

Thanks to the O.P. for posting this. I have had a great love for history all my life, it has taught me the importance of the saying, "Man is condemned to relive his past unless he learns from it". I have tried to instill this into my children and grandchildren. The most important thing we Americans have is the "Right to vote" That is why I served to uphold this blessing. Our form of government takes hard work, and we as a country do make mistakes, but think about this, why does everyone else in the world want to live here if it is so bad.

Agreed. But I would add that while we as a country make mistakes, our history shows an ongoing effort to correct those mistakes even while we make new mistakes. This country is not perfect, nor will it ever be. Nothing done by humans in this mortal world will ever be perfect, but so far, this has been man’s best shot at freedom and decent life.
