Wyatt convinced me to destroy my 71...

The inner fenders that recently came back from the powder coater will look nice when they go back in. Yesterday I bought a soda blaster and will be tackling the firewall once I build a tent around the front of the car. I tried it out yesterday on a small area, and it cleaned up really nice, but there was media everywhere in no time at all.
I’ll be working on finishing up the tent for the media blaster, re-install the heater box once everything has been received from AC Global clean up the crank with Emory cloth. The heads are coming back from the machine shop next week with the freshly hot tanked HP manifolds. Next is build the 440 and have it ready for break in.

What paint are y’all using for the inner fenders? Or did I read powder coat? Either way! Guess I’m looking for the finish they’ll have on them. I took mine out to install my power antenna and need to paint mine while it’s out.. Thx

Speaking of discovering stuff from this vehicles past...we are thinking it had a lot more colorful of a past then we first thought...

When we were starting to remove stuff to pull the heater box, Tim mentioned to me that one of the tubes wasnt connected to the heater box. No big deal it happens...or so I thought. I removed the duct/tube that goes under the column to the left dash vent. I looked into the box and said "Hey Tim! Theres a towel in your heater box man!" I pulled the towel out and found that it wasn't just a towel...I found a bag containing 2 bags of what we figured to be Crack. ALOT of it. I took some pictures of it as proof it happened, and down the toliet it went. I'm just glad we found it and not an officer during a traffic stop if that were to happen...I dont know how many times they have heard..."I've never seen that before in my life"

I am starting to understand more about why this 71 New Yorker from a rough side of Detroit was optioned with the U code..."my top end is unnnnnnnlimited."

The inner fenders had been powder coated the same as the stub frame and upper control arms in black satin.
powder coater told me when they removed the undercoating, some areas were as much as a 1/2" thick. I kind of believe him because they're a lot lighter now than they were when they got dropped off. Both were $120. A painter quoted me that much....but for each one.

…..maybe the previous owner was planning on getting some 26" DUBS with the profits from his shady business dealings.
As I told Wyatt, when I went up to Detroit to get this car, I was in a brand new Ford 250 diesel (rental) and in back of the house where the car was parked in the garage, there were 3 older (60+) on the back porch burning some nasty *** weed, and having a good ole time.
When I walked around the house with the seller, those older stoners looked at me like "this white boy must be crazy steppin up in here".

I believe my triple black 71 300 came from a very similar background. The gentleman was a pretty large individual judging by how worn/torn the driver seat was and the accompanying door arm rest and pull strap are. Otherwise, the interior is pristine and still smells new. And the sellers insisted the car was only 19K original miles, and at first I didn't believe it, but the more I have investigated many items with this car, I am convinced they were telling the truth afterall.

Those folks sure knew how to order their cars - all U codes and loaded with all the right options.

Maybe there is something in my background that I don't know about??? :D

You’re probably could’ve sold it which would have financed your build. LOL

That's an interesting tag you found, I wonder where ol' Brad H is today
I actually talk to some of those “ol’ Brad H” types here in the Detroit area. A lot of them are in the car hobby and enjoying retirement.
I just bought my new tires from one of them yesterday, long talk and a garage full of kool ****.

Probably so. In my early 20s I would have taken it and did that with it. But nowadays it's not worth the risk, also I'm not stupid anymore. We knew it had to go away right then and there.

At the beginning of this week, I was busy with work related matters, with a lot of customers concerns about covid-19, but as the week went on, it slowed down & got a little quiet around the office. Kind of eerie. With the slow down, it's been good time to work on the car now, instead of waiting for the weekend.
When the soda blaster was tried out last Saturday, it made a mess in the shop in a very short time. So I go to HF and pick up some plastic to close off the front of the car where I'll be working, with intent of keeping the soda contained.
The tent did it's job, but I went through the soda faster than expected. This morning I'm back at the store buying more to finish up the firewall sometime today.

I had some protective wear already. Hope I won't need to be wearing these when leaving the house...

Had a chance to disassemble the heater box today, taking some pics to be sure everything goes back the way it came apart....

Once the heater box was apart, I wanted to compare the new evaporator to the new one purchased from AC Global. For anyone considering or interested in this item, it looks like it's a match, and will go in without any adjustments.
I still need to order heater core from them When searching their eBay link, the HC5777 unit looks to be the one needed.

I remember having passion like this. Then I got old and redirected.
I appreciate and respect your passion and dedication.

I finished up all I plan on doing tonight with the soda blaster. It got most of the undercoating off that was still remaining.
I'll try a vinyl wire wheel tomorrow to clean up anything remaining, then scuff it up and spray with zinc chromate primer on the firewall before it gets the body matching paint
