I know for the Chevy Tri-fives, they has very detailed production numbers available. But so they have those for Mopar as well? I'm just curious what the numbers are for 1970, different body styles.

Unlike the A/B/E cars where there are solid production number records, most C body records were lost in a fire years ago.
There are some members here that may have some further information.
Others created a registry for certain make and models to document the cars still in existence.

There was no fire!
They were thrown away ...

I think you mean parted out...

Yeah good way to put it. The fire story is a rumor that has been around a long long time.
Guys that were there say they were trashed when liquidating assets. The fire story is an easy way to close up the discussion.

"The Standard Book of Chrysler" also has production figures, mainly by the model year and model, without the detailed installation rate of colors/options that can be found in the B/E-body cars.

I understand that much of what was in Chrysler Historical before the financial issues was moved off-site by the man who oversaw that department. When things were safe again, he moved them back and was heralded for saving much of Chrysler's history in the process. Seems like he passed away about 10 years ago?

Unfortunately, many of the car companies purged their archives when they needed room for more modern vehicle records. You had to know it was going to happen or be near a dumpster before the truck arrived, as was the case with lots of early Buick items. Or just got lucky to find them before the garbage truck arrived.

Just some thoughts,

That's just idiotic, surely they could've given the files and documents to car clubs/museums.

I have figures for models built for the US market. Do not have production figures for cars built for Canada or Export.

Thanks guys! Mine is 4-door hardtop Newport Custom.

cbarge mentioned that someone(s) may have a registry of cars that still exist. I'd be interested in adding mine to that registry. Im looking around - my dad says the window sticker should still exists because he saves everything. I found the brochure they got from the dealer!

Total Polara convertibles built was 842 - 696 for USA and 146 in Canada or Export

Polara Taxi, Polara Police, and Polara Special models built only for USA.
In Canada Taxi and Police packages were offered on Polara models.

Polara Special (mid-year intro - US market) had slant six as an option package.
Monaco 500 series is Canada only.
No Monaco or Monaco 500 convertibles were built for 1970.

In Canada slant six engine available on Polara sedan, Polara Custom sedan and 2 door hardtop. Should be separate production figures for those three models.

That's just idiotic, surely they could've given the files and documents to car clubs/museums.

In more modern times, I suspect the inclination would be to pass-off the files (or numbers there-in) to some interested parties to archive and put on the Net. BUI back then, having a single-line telephone was about as high-tech as it got. So about the only people who cared about "numbers" were the accountants, divisional managers, and respective plant managers. Back when there were just "cars" and "trucks" (especially in Chevy's realm of things). In other words, only well-placed people had access to "the numbers", usually. Then they'd use the prior model year's numbers to predict what they'd need for the up-coming year's production mix or models and options. Once all of the data analysis had been done, no need for "the numbers" any more. When the files got full, what was in them went somewhere else. Probably depended upon whom was making those decisions that day. Not unlike a dealer chuinking-out the prior model year's brochures, data books, and special dealer-advisory letters when the new models came out. Always focusing on the present and future rather than the past.

Be that as it may,

If you look at the published figures for the Chrysler Corporation cars you will find that Plymouth, DeSoto, Chrysler and Imperial are in place from 1930 through to the late 1970's. Dodge is the one with missing coverage, going only to 1955, plus the 1956 Coronet.

Don Butler was working on his "Plymouth and DeSoto Story" (1977) in the mid-1970's, as was Jerry Heasley with his book, "The Production Figure Book for U.S. Cars" (1977). Jerry Heasley thanked Don Butler for the production information for Plymouth, Dodge, and DeSoto through 1955 in the Acknowledgements of his book, which is as far as Mr. Heasley went for those makes in his book. Richard M. Langworth published the 1946 to 1975 figures in his book, "The Postwar Years - Chrysler & Imperial" (1977). George H. Dammann published his book, "70 Years of Chrysler" (1974) and had production figures from 1930 to 1973.

And it all came together with the "Standard Catalog of American Cars 1946-1975", John A. Gunnell, Editor. The book had production numbers for Chrysler Corporation through to and including 1975 - except for Dodge which had production figures only to 1955.

"The Standard Catalog of American Cars 1976-1999" had production figures for the Chrysler Corporation cars from 1976 to 1989. From 1990 the figures were totals by body style. For example, the 1990 Dodge Monaco had two 4 door sedan models - LE and ES. The combined total of 1990 Monaco sedans came to 7,153. No further breakdown was presented .

As for the missing Dodge figures from 1956 through to 1975, they are known and some have been published - in Collectible Automobile. They have presented production figures for 1955-56, 1957-59, 1960-61, 1962-64 Dodge models plus the 880 models. Figures were presented as courtesy Chrysler Historical. Nothing on Lancer (1961-62) or A-body Dart, but other models after 1965 have appeared. Although not C body.

The Chrysler edition of the Standard Catalog has Dodge production figures for 1970 and up (1970-71 Polara and Monaco is incomplete) but nothing for 1956-1958, 1960-1964 (except the 880 models) and 1974-75.

And absolutely nothing for Canadian production. But I'm sure Chrysler Historical has that, too.

I've got Chrysler Corporation production for the U.S. market from 1965 to 1973. I have the 1974 report, sort of, but whoever did the copying did not notice that the report was double sided. Thus I have only the odd number pages for 1974.

So I am sure there are production numbers for Dodge out there, and at Chrysler Historical. Just need someone to dig them out.

For the Canadian market. Do not have breakdowns for 6 and V8 engines - just totals only.
High production for Fury I sedans due to fire and police units being option packages on those models instead of separate models as in the U.S.
