I guess no one thought anything about doing this back then.

looks like thats not a true conversion, looks like its an insert camper that you take the trunk lid off to use.
take it off, put the trunk lid back on and its a sedan again.
this is what i'd call a conversion ( heheh )

Oh what I'd give to find a 56 chrysler like that. Fix er up and cruise the country in it.
The camper on the fury is very nicely made and certainly not just a standard slide in. It has such a long overhang and short main section. Anybody know if such a thing was ever marketed or a nice one off custom?

If you look close, looks like still has a trunklid on it, you can see it to the right of the red line. The good fit on it means this was a specifically tailored for this year/make/model - or a custom fit of something else.

Good eye to catch that, yes, it's a very specific configuration for just this purpose.

I've seen a handful of these on ebay over the years (campers on cars, that is), usually they are completely ragged out. This Fury seems to be in quite serviceable condition - look at the condition of that side trim and how well it aligns! A little rusty along the edges but seems to have good bones, and sitting fairly level. As an odd thought, I wonder what it would drive like with FirmFeel sway bars and upgraded T-bars and springs???

yes, i took the pics a month + ago on feb 17.
its at a private car hoard here on vancouver island.
i could be going back there in a month or so
Thx. I was eyeball’en that NYB next to the 56 Yorker/camper. Was wondering what shape it was in. BUT! I’m in NYC, so getting part is a wash..

In the 50s & 60s, before RVs as we know them, travel trailers and those slide-in pick-up campers were about all there was. These conversion things were a spin-off of the slide-in pick-up thing. Seems most of these on a 50s or 60s vehicle.

Perfect for going to the lake or towing your digger from one dragstrip to the next. Way more comfort and sustainable highway speed than a pickup of the era.
