Hello friends,
How can I remove the wide metal sheet on the top of the dashboard (the one with the vents and central loudspeaker grille)? Is there a way to remove it without removing the whole dashboard?
Thanks for your help,
Sebastien

I think on my 1977 Gran Fury Cop Car the metal part pops out and is held in place with spring clips. Feel free to correct me if I'm wrong anyone as it has been decades since I owned that car.

Here's a illustration from the 1974 Parts Manual, I think you are referring to part #2.

I remember while I was installing a radio in my 77 PK41 while I was under the dash doing the wiring with a flashlight you can see where the spring clips are located and where to pry from up above. Now I had the speedometer cluster out to clean it and that gave me a little bit of a better view. I don't know if the factory service manual show the pry areas from up above or not. Pad & pry very carefully would be best course to follow.

I removed mine from my 75 and 77 NYB.. as mentioned above, it’s held in place by spring clips. I use a Plastic style puffy knife, it’s all I had. My point is! you something very thin sturdy and plastic, also find a sturdy piece of cardboard to lay on the dash, using your thin plastic or nonmetal device, get between the padded part of your dash and the metal and gently Pry it up. I used cardboard to protect the dash pad because it is 40+ years old and is not as pliable and forgiving as it was 40 years ago. Assuming it’s been there since new/40+ years, it may be a little resistant. But keep prying it up and the metal Panel will pop up.. I hope my description is oddly clear, I don’t have pictures or I would share.

Thanks a lot for this explanation, the Haynes service manual does not give much info

Thanks a lot for this explanation, it's quite clear! And Haynes manual service book is very evasive about this removal, thanks again, I'll try tomorrow :thankyou:

Those clips require a LOT of force to get that panel to pop up. Like John 75landyacht said make sure you put a thin piece of metal or plastic down our you may damage your dash pad.
Oh... and the edges are razor sharp also! Wear some good gloves.

Hum Hum... 25 seconds.
25 seconds, is exactly the time it took to remove the metal grille from the dashboard... Using all your advices, I thought it would be very hard to remove it. But no. Very easy, no effort, except for not scraping the windshield. A long time ago (several years ago), I tried to remove it, by pulling. At that moment, it was so hard that I would not continue at the risk of damaging some parts. But today...
Sometimes, we have good surprises with our old babies!
