looks very clean, one owner car, too bad the ad doesn’t say that much about the condition of the car like whether the a/c works or not, it states a lot of fluff about the overall model in general. Curious as to what this no reserve car will sell for. Only bad thing going on with this car is the headliner, have no clue what it would cost to replace. Those seats look damn comfy ://www.hemmings.com/auction/1988-chrysler-fifth-avenue_medium=email&utm_source=auctions_newsletter&utm_campaign=2020-03-26

The headliner is not a big issue. Very typical of all domestic cars of the 80's.
My 87 Diplomat I removed the headliner fabric and left the roof alone.
You can get a large roll of Mactac and remove the dried up old foam, and stick the Mactac onto the headliner board...done.

Overall they were good solid cars. The last rear wheel drive passenger car in the Mopar stable. The rear ends had issues because it was a 7 1/4 inch differential in a heavy vehicle. Maybe it was the hills here in western PA that killed those diffs at an early age, but I remember replacing a few of them. Headliners were a problem too but cheap and easy to replace.

Some came with 8-1/4 rears.
Yes the 2.2 gear ratio 7-1/4 could only take so much abuse.
The trans however had a super low first gear to accomodate the highway gears..

I was never a big fan of these cars because they were badly under powered. They did have really nice comfortable seats though.

Last week I pulled a set of rear brakes from an '86 Fifth Avenue. It had the 7 1/4" axle.'
I posted about it and a guy at FBBO told me I was wrong...that ALL the Fifth Avenue cars had 8 1/4" axles.
As if this was the first Mopar that I had ever seen.
Yeah....what a jerkoff.

I love my M bodies and have 2 of them pulling daily driver duty. Both are 318 2bbl and 7.25. Never saw a 7.25 fail behind a stock drivetrain if you kept on top of fluid changes.

Underpowered? Yes. But stone axe reliable and very comfortable in ways you can't get in cars today...

It's a common rule that sl6 cars got 7-1/4" and V8 cars got 8-1/4", but that was in the 60s-early 80s.
In the 80s, I'd bet that the 7-1/4 / 8-1/4" usage came more from the Diplomat side of things, when there were sl6, 318-2 and 318-4 engine offerings and copcar offerings.
I believe that the 5ths, which had no drivetrain options (correct?) were all built the same with 7-1/4".

Agreed - a 318-2 with a 2.2 axle is a real dog. Had an 80 Dippy wagon, and the TC lockup would hit at 35mph, no matter what. Going uphill - bam! Lockup. Pulling a little trailer? Bam! Lockup.

What do you guys think about what this car should sell for? What it’s worth or a good price?

Dad had a gorgeous new 83 Fifth Avenue with the 318.
I didn’t find it as underpowered, for the day, as I did find it a poor handler. Rode a bit soft and leaned too much in the turns.
If I were to buy it when he turned it in, first thing I was gonna do is a set Gabriel Striders shocks set to firm.

These cars are not generating a lot of collector interest. A nice one might fetch $2500 to the right buyer. More typically, they sell in the $1200-$1500 range.

I had a number of these back in the day, They normally came with the 7 1/4 rear axle. I always changed the rear ends to the 8 1/4 from a squad car, whole assembly from spring to spring. This way I got the rear sway bar, and 11" rear brakes. (I would also grab the police speedo out of the donor car). Man where they fun.

I grew up in BP in the 70's.

They were very popular cars then. Many of the 5th Ave. employee company cars were “tagged” before they were turned in. Meaning employees not in the plan bought them before they went to dealer auction.

Sure, they're comfortable, but so are proper C bodies! The 1980s was such a DISMAL DECADE I'd never bring myself to own one. If GIVEN one of these, I'd flip it even for just a junk yard C body....... or B or A. My wife would too.

Early 5th Aves could be had with a slant 6 or the 318 2 bbl. I forget which year the Slant 6 no longer became available.

Put a dana axle and a 360 in it,put thicker roll bars on it and dampen down the suspension. maybe lower it an inch.Maybe a brake package to.It then becomes a more manageable handling car.It has potential.Dash and seats are lovely.Has potential.B.B
