I've recently come across a suitable parts car, so I'm switching out the standard headlight surrounds on my '72 Fury III for the hideaway headlamp assemblies. If any of you have done this already, I'd like to hear what I need and what I should look out for. I already have the whole front bumper with the mechanism in it, the wiring for the motor back to the bulkhead connector, and the switch out of the parts car. Anything else I should get? I will be going back to the yard in a few days, most likely, so I can grab whatever else I need. Thanks in advance for the help.

I'm 90% certain that you will need the headlamp mounting panels from the other car.

I will try to verify that for sure by the end of the weekend.

There's also a relay under the dash for the motor. You'll want that along with as much of the wiring and connectors that you can get. The cleanest way to do it would be to pull the entire dash harness, but that's about an hour's worth of work. Otherwise, it's not a big deal to splice the new wires into your existing harness. The relay is usually attached to the bottom of the dash, just to the left of the steering column, and if I remember correctly, has a heavy, bright green wire going to it,. May also have a red protective cap on the wire lug.

Thanks, Jeff. Do you happen to have a pic of the relay? Also, how do I wire everything up?
I considered getting the headlamp mounting panels from the other car as well, but as far as I can tell, they look identical.

Here's the best I can do for a pic of the relay without sticking my head in a puddle of green swamp water. If the car you are pulling the parts off of has A/C, the relay will be hidden behind the duct that goes to the left side of the dash.

I was a little off on the wiring. Smaller wires are bright green and larger are dark blue.

Headlamp panels are definitely different, though the differences are quite subtle when just looking at them. I don't believe the picture in the crash book of the hidden H/L panel is accurate. I don't think it has the shelf at the bottom as pictured.

I believe the bracket going to the rad support is the same, but I'd grab it just to be safe.

I installed the hideaway assemblies today. Sure enough, the headlight doors scrape on the stock headlamp panels, so I'm going to need those from the parts car. Otherwise, I love the way these look on the car, so I can't wait to get them working.

On a side note, the parts car appears to have been equipped with the headlight time delay feature. Are any additional components required to make that work?

My 70 Sport Fury had the headlight time delay....pretty cool function. Only problem is that the headlight door will stay open then when you get into the car and you have forgotten about them when you turn the ignition ON they come slamming shut and scare the begeezus out of you. ;) :D

How they are wired in I don't know. Seems like grabbing the entire dash harness would probably save you a bunch of wiring and you would net the cool headlight delay function in the process.

Looking Good!

In my opinion, the time delay feature probably isn't worth the trouble unless you decide to do the entire dash harness for the hidden headlamp conversion.
