We bought a house

The back faces East
awesome. you'll have some shade on the deck in the afternoon. attached garages are where it's at. easier to put in running water for a sink to wash your hands in. @thrashingcows makes a good point. build for capacity. also his front and rear doors are great for driving through if bringing something in with a wrecker. again, best of health and happiness for many years to come!

Congrats on the new house!! I can attest to moving away from the dense city centers, I have 5 acres of mostly tree land and can only barely see one neighbours house to the north of me, I love it out here away from everything.

Is you new home on septic of city sewer? Just looking at the land and wonder if that large area where you want the shop might have a septic drainage field below ground?

I'm just finishing my 3 year journey building my shop, I went with 14' ceiling for hoist clearances as well as 12' high doors front and rear for large equipment or RV if required in the future.
The septic is on the south side of the house. The future garage will be on the north side.

Congratulations! Looks like a nice place. Do you have power in that shed out back? Could be a nice man cave back there.
Yes, there is power in the shed. There is a man cave in the basement. Pic's of the inside of the house coming soon

Congrats, is this looking toward retirement?
I turned 50 last fall, so retirement is a way off. I do plan on staying here forever though.

You're gonna need a John Deere...
I have a little one, but you never know. A friend has a bigger one with a loader. He also has a backhoe for those big jobs.

Put these thoughts on your‘project list’:

- running a septic line to the shop
- shower, toilet, sink & washroom with wash tub in the shop
- check electrical service to the shop you may want to run a separate 200 amp service just to the shop

feel free to ping me on other ‘improvements’

fun!

Weren't you the member who once lived in the same little Detroit bedroom suburb as me? I see Marlette, MI as your location. I'm 47.5 so we are closer in age than I thought...

Sorry that was not me. I haven't lived in Detroit in 46 years, I have been in the Thumb since. Except when I was in the Air Force.
I need to get to the City to meet some of you guy's though.

Gotcha! I'm horrible with real names, let alone usernames! I asked because watching the masses react to the "virus" is giving me more move-to-BFE thoughts than any of the Detroit mayhem I've gotten accustomed to.

We have low case numbers up here, stay safe down there.
Some weekend if you want something to do, take a road trip up this way and we can grab dinner. When all the restaurants open back up that is.

I don't want to derail this into another virus post, so I'll just say we're all doing well here. If I wasn't such a work-on-cars-and-house guy, I imagine I'd be more upset. I appreciate that offer.

So I started putting up crown molding Monday night and finished it Thursday night. It just needs touch up paint on the seams and nail holes.

I started trimming out the doorways and windows also. We took all the old trim down, it was easier to paint the walls and the old trim was boring.

Here is the kitchen doorway, it just needs it's seams and holes touched up, I have the old crown molding to paint and put back up.

A friend once told me a saying his wood shop teacher used to say and I find a lot of truth in it. Cut and carve, do your best, paint and caulk to hide the rest. Latex painters caulk hides the nail holes and seams great. Best of all you can paint over it.

Nice job, did you cope the inside corners or mitre?

I always mitre because my coping comes out even worse.
Damn. What's the secret?
Just like anything Stan, it takes practice but if you run one side right into the corner and cut the other as if to mitre it you instantly have the perfect line to follow with the coping saw. I can make a coped corner look better quicker than I can a mitred one.

I coped the corners. I was going to try and take the easy way out and miter the corners, but they are not perfect 90's. So for me, the cope was the easy way. Although it did take me longer to do 4 corners than hang the long runs.

Stan mentioned that I am going to need a John Deere. I have a small one now

It's only a 42" deck and my back up mower is a 46" deck

My bosses son has this F725 he wants to sell

F725.jpg

It has a 54" deck, he brought it over so I could take it for a test mow. I am kinda up in the air about it. It's a commercial mower and would last for years to come. Not quite a zero turn, but it does turn sharp. It's a 95, so it's 25 years old and has 2000 hrs on it. Any thoughts?

How much lawn do you have to mow?
I am on 16 acres and I am presently doing it with an e130 (42” wide deck). It takes me about 20 hours to mow all of the grass, including brush-hogging about 3 acres with Lucifer (I-H model 666).

I will probably get a 50+ inch mower next year and keep the e130.

I think the larger mower would benefit you, but it might be overkill if you have less than 3 or 4 acres...
