Hello!

I pulled the center section out of the rear end of my '65 Fury to replace it with a Sure Grip. To get the axles out, I pulled the backing plates from the axle housing. The axles are held in by a retaining ring on the brake side of the backing plate. In between the axle housing and the back side of the backing plate is a gasket that looks to be make out of whitish plastic, which Napa had in stock.

However, between the retaining ring and the backing plate, one side has a platic/composite gasket similar to the backing plate to axle housing, and the other side has a metal shim type gasket. I've attached pics of both.

The guys at Napa said that they showed both types of gaskets for the rear end.

Should I use the metal shim gaskets between the retaining ring and the backing plate, and the plastic gasket between the back side of the backing plate and the axle housing, or ?.

Thanks in advance for the help.

Chris

I've used paper ones. But, if yours had a plastic one, and you have a new one available, I'd used what was previously in there.

Snotty -

Thanks. I'm going to use the white gaskets between the backing plate and the axle housing, because that's what was there, but I'm not sure what I should use between the retaining ring and the backing plate. Metal shim (black in the picture) that was on the pass side backing plate, or a paper type that was on the driver's side backing plate.

I'd have to go and look at my pictures, but I remember using only one gasket, not two. Where exactly it was placed is what I would have to look at.

I just looked it up in my '70 Service Manual. (Don't have one for a '65.) It illustrates two gaskets, both used between the backing plate and the axle housing. Interesting.

You use ONE OF EACH. I redid my axle bearings 3 yrs ago, with a reputable kit. The 66 FSM showed the pass side as illustrated:

Note the metallic retainer and the non-metallic gasket.

The metal between the brake backing plate and housing. The foam between the brake backing plate and retainer.
