Guys, the convertible has a leaking heater core now all the other leaks are dealt with. What all does it entail to replace it on a non a/c '68? What all will I need to have the job done? I was thinking about my son doing it for me so I need to know whats needed.

You will need a new heater core, new air box gasket and assorted small sockets. The non-A/C cars are pretty straight forward to pull the air box and remove the core.

Got a core. Where do I get a gasket??

The heater box bolts are on the engine side of firewall and the box drops down onto the floor inside.
Mark and carefully remove the vacuum lines and wires going to the box.
Don't be surprised the heater ducts fall apart--very common. Availailable in repop nowadays.
make sure the right side intake vent duct is aligned properly.

The whole job is easier to do with the front seat, glovebox and ashtray out of the way.
Not necessary but your back will be happier at the end of the day.

This my box??

I have a 68 ac convertible and mine just went out this week too. The ac isn't actively hooked up but still have the compressor on the engine. Started puking inside, now have no heat or ac. Lol.

I am using an original that ws recored.
Avoid the Spectra one.

I'd need another core to get redone then, as my car has to be done in a day, and then I have to find a radiator shop willing to do it. Local shop won't mess with heater cores anymore. We only have one in the valley.

Ok, local shop DOES recore, but for 325 bucks. Has anyone replaced a core on a slab side without air? If so, brand you used?

I rather pay to get original recored and not deal with any Chinese crap.
Plus being done locally you get warranty and support local business.
Lord knows our economy needs as much help we can afford.
Sometimes you just have to pony up when it comes to our beloved cars.
A hobby,a toy and when you want to play ya gotta pay,LOL!!

The local radiator shop guy found one for my '68, although this was in 2008. I don't have a brand, only a number #9101 Way less than re-coring. was a perfect fit. I don't know the brand.
As said above get the seals and gaskets from DMT. I was one of the first to work with him to get the seals for the Heat only box. We took his B- body kit and made some adjustments and measurements. And came up with the C-body one. If you are in there replace them and clean out the mice.
I also sent him every single body seal and gasket on my '68 2r ht. I got a full complete set back. Great guy to work with.

I just finished mine but the heater core was fairly new and a good one. Just had a line get jarred loose so soldered that up and cleaned put the mouse remnants. It was horrible and I hope to not do it again. So every extra hole is getting screen. Up to roof area from trunk, in and out of heater ducts.
I ended up just using foam and foam tape that was in stock but a person could easily spend more than those premade kits if you went to buy the stuff individually.
