Hello,
I'm desperate !!
The rear brakes on my NYB are completely new: new brake shoes, new hardware, new cables (left, right and center).
With slacking brake cables, I adjust the brake shoes as described in the Manual.
Then adjusting the parking brake for 3-4 clicks on the pedal.
The normal brake ist working well, but the parking brake has very poor performance - downhill the car will not stay. On very slow speed, i can't stop the car with the parking brake.
Can there be something wrong with the parking brake strut lever ?
(When I bought the car, the problem has always been there.)

Does anyone have an idea ?????

Greetings
Wolfgang

Start by deploying the park brake to see if the shoes are moving outward as they should. You can observe this with the brake drums off as they are in the photo. The strut lever appears to be properly installed. How much have you driven the car since the brakes were replaced? You could have an issue with the shoes not being mated to the drums. The parking brake is not really designed to stop a car down hill. It is designed to keep a parked car from rolling off, but it should still slow the car down and eventually stop it.

Hello Dave,
thank you for your information.
There are no more then 100 mls with the new shoes.
Your record "...You could have an issue with the shoes not being mated to the drums.." makes me think ! 3 month ago I bought the new 11" shoes from rockauto (ACDELCO 17446B) and dont check it with the drums :-(
Now i ordered a new pair of brake shoes from summit and start again. (and now also check with the drums)

"stop the car" : in my avatar you can see my carport - the parking brake can't hold the car on this easy slope !!

Thank you
Greetings Wolfgang

Isn't there an adjusting nut on the P-brake cable, somewhere under the front seats? (Under the car, of course.)

does your parking brake stay down when you park the car and shut it off ?
does it release automatically when you put it in gear ?

Hello,

- after adjustment the parking brake pedal can be pushed down for 3 to 4 "clicks". (before adjusting i can push it to the floor)
- my car have the "automatic release" option. In "P" it stay pushed and is released when the motor is running and put in gear.
- ther is no adjusting nut in the front part - the front cable (it is new) is only connected to the pedal-mechanism with a ball.

The whole "cable machanism" ist working really smooth, the brake levers are pulled from the cables -- BUT the whole stuff generates not enough friction !!!

My fault: when i replace the shoes, i only compare the new shoes with the old ones. No check how the stay in the drums. When i bought the car, the the parking brake was also unusable. That was the reason why i replace the cables and shoes.

My next job: i ordered the following parts and also new shoes (all for 11" drums) - hopefully i dont get china-crab.

greetings from vienna
