Dumpster diving treasures

As I see I'm not the only one coming back from the dumpster sometimes with more than I got rid of. Some idiotic law over here at least actually makes it a crime to take even worthless junk with no material value with you from there, most of the personnell however don't care.

Interesting point of law here... Property placed at the curb is considered abandoned and of no value. Thus the police need no warrant to collect your garbage, which has been used to discover drug manufacture, ID theft rings, etc. It also lead to a hilarious security video in my city (that I can't find right now!) But basically a person had a camera on their backyard garage that covered an area behind the house with a shiny new BBQ grill on wheels. Somehow, the wind blew the grill into the driveway and down to the curb, a distance of about 80 feet, without it tipping or getting stuck on an expansion strip. When it reached the driveway approach, the angle caused it to fall neatly onto the curb/easement. Exactly as if someone had placed it for the trash. Of course you know what happens next... Within a few minutes, a guy drives past with a truck. He reverses, jumps out and with a big smile on his face loads the grill into the truck bed. Even more funny, the resident put the video online to help "catch the thief". and was blind to the humor of the situation. He expected the police to search for and prosecute the guy in the truck.

Someone mentioned the Shorpie site. A friend scanned and uploaded a bunch of his father's 35mm color slides taken of Detroit in the 1960s. Years later he was contacted by a restaurant in San Francisco that offered him a free meal in exchange for permission to use his photo and a year after that, a book publisher gave him a small royalty and an autographed copy of a coffee table book that used another photo.

Very cool....something I will consider. My Father was a merchant sailor for 15 years, 1959-1974-ish, and probably 75% of his slides are of places around the world that he visited.

I had the trashed items on a dump Yard in mind first, but as far as the trash in the trashcan is concerned there was a time when some Supermarket chains complained an offence to the Police when homeless dived into their Containers for Food until they got some negative press Reviews.

And there is the case of Gerhard Richter, one of the highest priced living artists who took a man to court who fished out some of his thrown away rough sketches which are estimated at around 60k EUR even unsigned, who wanted to auction them off. The Artist won and the sketches were considered property of the Artist destined to be destroyed by the waste disposal Company who empties the bins. That idea cost him more than 3k in penalties plus the costs of the Trial.
