Hey experts,
Been a shade tree mechanic for a looong time. had Mopars in high school and enjoyed walking away from mustangs and camaros.
However been quite a while since ive done a rebuild.
Looking for feedback / correction on the process i recall
67 Fury III w/383, 727, 8.75 diff.

I dismantled the 383 and dropped the parts at a local machine shop.
Reassembled and installed in the car.
I do recall having to break in the cam on startup (yes i have startup oil). as i recall - idle about 2500 rpm for about 20 min while gently changing the rpm between 1500 and 3000.
let it cool, change oil and filter - using break in oil for another 500 miles.

Trans: Had a shop rebuild the trans - so its dry. after research it seems i should put in a gallon of dex/merc III before starting.
Then run it for a few minutes, shut off and add more fluid.

Q- not sure about shutting off after a couple minutes while needing to break in the cam.
thoughts? comments?
Q - will running the engine for 20 min with only a gallon of trans fluid harmful?

TIA,
Pappy.

Yes not good. Don’t shut off engine. Put in 5 qts, before starting engine and put in 4-5 more qts immediately after starting it. Have it in neutral when starting it. then after cam break in at normal curb idle check and adjust fluid level.

Vary rpm for 2000 to 3000 don’t go below 2000 rpm on cam break in.

You never want to let an automatic run low on oil, it will overheat.

Did you put a quart in the torque converter before you re-installed it?
