1967 chrysler newport. I have soent almost 2 years now with an ashtray that doesnt close all the way or line up right and a glove box door that wont line up with the dash when closed. Tried and tried to adjust things and they still look like ****. Does anyones line up?

On my '66 all the gaps are right, but the ashtray stick out a tiny bit further than the surround. I was able to "adjust" it and get it better, but not perfect.

Pictures?

There are some adjustments on the glove box doors, on the hinge and also where the hinge attaches to the door itself.

Presuming you've already adjusted the striker on the IP so it does not take additional force to close it, but also not to rattle when closed? A bit of fancy lube on the latch tab itself? That's the easy part, to make sure it's closed and doesn't rattle on bumps. THEN getting the door better-aligned, that might take holding your mouth just right.

The center "coin tray/ash tray" can be a little different, due to the way they mount to the IP. Might be able to help the "not fully in" deal with some elective re-shaping of the slide-roller mechanism (which affects how far it will slide). If the basic support structure is not whopperjawed, then the only adjustments will be in the mechanisms attached to it. Sometimes, "selective re-forming" might be gently done.

Enjoy!

My 66 T&C ash tray and glove box do not line up very well...

Glove box is fine, I dicked around with the ash tray and couldn't get it any closer then it is. I just deal with it as that's the way it came from the factory and accept it as normal. I'm not as anal as Foose about having things fit and look perfect!!

My father bought his Chrysler New in 67. The ashtray nor the glove compartment door weren't aligned even then.
I distinctly remember this because that car became mine 3 yrs later.

‘67&’68 apply here.
The glove box plastic door easily gets warped. Also if you have a broken spring on the hinge it will be difficult to get the gap’s right. You can do some hinge alignment to open and close without hanging up. I did use a heat gun to help straighten mine a little.
The the ash tray has double tang to help hold it all the way in. Mine is missing this second piece so wants to stay partially open as well.
This is what the tang is supposed to look like. Picture borrowed off EBay.

Well I dont have any broken springs or hinge parts. I have set the latch and adjusted/tweaked the hinge arms as much as I could and it still just doesn't sit right. The inner plastic isn't very warped on mine and I can live with it. The ashtray....it just doesn't fit right no matter what I do.

They never did "fit" right...ever.
You can play with the ashtray bracket, lube the ball bearings but to no avail.
I know these cars inside and out and it is something I have accepted.
The steering wheel hides the line between the dash and glovebox door,LOL!! Did that on purpose,LOL

Let's face it...Fit and finish was not a huge priority back then on our mass produced vehicles.
Build quality only got worse in the 70's--so count your lucky stars,LOL!!
