How much backlash should there be on a timing chain and sprocket,65 BB mine seems like a fair bit when moved with a bar and socket,,just wondering if it is time for a replacement,,, Dave

0 to 5 degrees is OK, Anything over 10 degrees should be replaced. Of course if you have the plastic timing gear get that out of there.

No way I would be able to live with it at 5° swing. Makes it retarded cam timing, which with such a mellow cam probably makes no difference, but it would bother me that I am losing low end snappiness, in reality it would be in my head I'm sure.

For INSURANCE issues, IF there's any doubt that it has not been changed, then open it up and see! All things considered.

As for "slack" checks? I read a method and amount in an OLD manual, somewhere, but don't recall what the amount was. I highly suspect it was more than 5 degrees, though.

To me, it's not "the swing", but the wear on the sprockets that will retard timing. Chain stretch might, but the amount of "swing" would be more related to sprocket wear, I suspect. When the engine's running, the "pull" side of the chain will be where the tension is, not on the other side. Any retard would relate to sprocket wear and/or chain stretch, I believe.

Back to the "insurance" and "peace of mind" situation . . . put a good roller chain (Mopar Perf should have one or Cloyes Plus Roller or "full roller" chain) in it and be done with it. No more worries for well past 100K miles!

Enjoy!

When i ckd on my 300, had about 5-6 degree swing. I got another question, fixen to pull off my oil pump, never done this before, any tricks or tips i need to know. Gaskets or things? Still no oil pressure on the 440.

Should be a flat gasket or two? Pack with Vaseline (or similar) upon re-assembly? What does the end of the distributor drive gear shaft look like? FSM downloaded?

Just some thoughts,

really did improve engine performance. can feel an improvement in the mid range torque. pulled the oil pan and cleaned the muck out of the bottom.

with new oil pump, now has oil pressure. had to jack the engine to get the pump out.

Dist is new, have not taken intermediate shaft out, cam gear looks good. Was thinking dist shaft was to short, but starts and runs. Hoping just need to prime.
