fixing up my 70 NEWPORT need help with sourcing parts?

motor oil and trans? I use straight 30 here in California and dex/merc ATF for the trans, these ok?

Power Steering Fluid - Any name brand or NAPA's power steering fluid.

Oil - Recommend Penn Grade (formerly Brad Penn) or a good quality name brand oil and a ZDDP additive. Penn Grade is a semi-synthetic with ZDDP added. Your engine needs ZDDP, which has been removed or greatly reduced in today's oils.

If your car does not have a tired engine that burns oil I'm not sure that you need a 30W oil. You are probably good with a 10W-30/40, 15W-40 or 20W-50 in my opinion. I prefer a Wix or Napa Gold oil filter. These are just my preferences and I am sure others will offer theirs.

Some folks will recommend Type F trans fluid but one of the Dextrons as I recall is what Chrysler used.

just bought the steering pump, thanks Big John!

I can not agree with this recommendation and wish you good luck. I will never buy anything Cardone ever again. They seem to ususally clean up the part and then send it back out just like it came in - messed up and nothing fixed and often for the wrong application as well. What a miserable company.

The one I bought is working just fine. I think a couple guys here have bought these and I heard no reports of them being bad.

While I agree that rebuilding isn't what it used to be (actually it never was), there isn't a lot of choice out there. I don't even know if there is anyone else rebuilding parts on a production basis these days.

My preference has to repair the parts myself. I've fixed alternators, starters etc. and have put new seals in PS pumps. In this case, I just had too many irons in the fire and the price beat the cost of my time. As anyone that's messed around with cars, I've had good rebuilds and a couple bad ones too, just as I've had good new parts and a few bad ones.

I am wired similarly.
I even ‘reground’ the regeneration cam on a water softener (filled it up with J-B weld and filed the new ‘switch points’).

I'm thinking about buying a edelbrock 4 barrel carb and intake (part numbers 1406 and 2186 for my 383 engine. Has anyone done this? Whats involved other than bolting this intake and carb on ? I remember someone mentioned having to modify the throttle linkage?

Be sure to get this:
Edelbrock Throttle Cable Brackets 8021

Get a new valley pan gasket as well.

If you are swapping for a 2bbl, you might have a problem with the kick-down linkage. Others can verify or deny.
