How to remove rear armrests on 68 300 convertable

I'd like to remove the armrests from the side panels so I can refinish them. I have the panels out of the car, but it appears that the padding has to be removed to access the screws that are holding them to the panel. But I can't determine how to remove the pads. Are they just glued on or are there some kind of clips holding them on?

I saw that thread, but unfortunately the ones on my 300 are attached differently. I can take a picture of them later today, but I'll try and explain. On mine, the bolts are threaded into square plastic "nuts" that are pressed into the panel from above (i.e. between the armrest and the panel). So I can't simply unscrew the nuts and lift off the armrest :mad:
 
That really surprises me, I have long been under the impression that they were all (65-68) functionally similar and have seen them listed as interchangeable. I'd like to see photos. Hey, pmissile - @pomonamissel , you've done a lot with 68's, can you help with this one?
 
Yeah, I've had mine out for months sitting in the garage but hadn't looked at them lately. Then when I saw that thread the other day I was like "wait a minute, I don't remember it being that easy". Excited, I went and checked them and was brought quickly back to reality. Also, another small difference is they're only held on with two bolts instead of three like in your pic.
 
Here's how the pads are affixed to the panels on my 68 300 vert

Now that I think about it, I could probably just use my Dremel and a disc and carefully cut away the plastic fingers that are protruding around the bolt and then push them out. Then just use regular nuts to reattach them. Thoughts?
 
So I got the armrests removed from the side panels yesterday. These are what were holding them on:

They weren't threaded and were pretty easy to just break the tabs off them with a dremel tool to cut and small screwdriver for prying.

but the pads do have threaded bolts built into them so when I put them back together I'll be able to use washers and nuts

Wow, that's weird. Makes me think someone else was in there before you.
