Anyone have problems finding the correct gas cap for their 71 Polara. Anyone have the correct Mopar or Stant part number? A few years back when I was getting my 71 on the road, it was missing the gas cap. My 69 New Yorker cap didn't fit right. I found A NOS cap on Ebay-it didn't fit either-too loose. I went back to the 71 Parts Manual and found out there was an early, April and before, and then after April. My car was a late build and they had 2 different numbers on the locking gas cap. I ordered the late one and it fits.
I want a regular cap. Any ideas? Anyone know if the patrol cars used something different? Thanks!

Is any of the metal inside the filler neck bent or worn?

The edges where the cap's tangs slide on can sometimes get damaged with use over time. And sometimes the tangs get damaged too. Also, the rubber seal might have shrunk....

IDK if this helps you. I just sold this one,but this is what it looks like.

According to www.RockAuto.com catalog, Stant 10807 is the May, 1971 and newer cap, which fits Chrysler products from May, 1971 to some 1979 rwd models. It's the "tall" cap with the extended index tangs where it goes into the filler neck. On the locking cap, the lock tangs are in an extended center body, significantly below the cap's seal.

Stant 10806 is the "prior to May, 1971" production. A normal "flat and thin" cap, which goes backward in model years to 1970. On the locking version, the locking tabs are just under the outer seal gasket of the cap. Looks more like a '60s-style cap rather than the later emissions control fuel cap.

In BOTH cases, the 807 fits many GM cars from 1971-1974. The 10806 fits many 1970 GM cars. Neither is Chrysler vehicle specific.

Enjoy!

Here goes again. When I first started looking for the cap-I have a 73 Polara parts car and a 69 New Yorker, neither of those caps were right. I have a 70-71 Parts manual and 3549086 looked like the right one. On the regular gas caps in 70-71 it didn't show an early or late difference. I paid quite a bit of money for the 3549086 and it is too loose. I went down to the locking gas caps in the parts manual and showing an early and a late, I found the 3583561 and it fits. A few weeks ago I decided I wanted a regular cap and I got ahold of an old Stant book. It showed the early and late caps. I got a 807 off of Ebay and it too does not fit, loose just like the original 3549086 Mopar cap that I tried. I guess I'll try a Stant 806, I don't have much to loose. Anyone have any more suggestions, I'm open for them.
I'll keep using the locking cap I have for now.
