I posted this on Maggie May thread and wanted to share it on this Tech forum.
Last fall the rear window ws out so we did reppairs to the roof and eventually the headlinder and vinyl top was installed.
My guy slipped and when he caught himself,he crunched the left speaker grille in what was a pristine rear package tray.
He felt really bad about it but **** happens and nobody got hurt. he discounted his job to compensate a replacement.

Fast forward from November and no luck finding another package tray that was worth using.
We discovered that a 4 door one is different.
Wth no reproduction trays available I had to get creative.
We even bought a pair of 6x9 speakers and thought of covering the holes with just the speaker covers that came with them.
But they would look cheesy and out of place in a 51 year old car.
So what can we do??

Sometime factory faux pas can be a blessing.
Why?
Turns out the line workers did NOT cut out the speaker holes for the rear defog intake and left rear speaker.
That saved all the pieces that fell in..
Then i wondered why I had to crank up the radio volume and the rear defog did not work so well..

I removed the insulation from the speaker hole (which should have been done in the fall of 1968 at the Windsor Plant)
Again, using the glue gun and toothpicks as stints put it back into the tray..

Here is the rough finished product.
Tomorrow will give it a quick spray bomb of Flat Black to cover up any flaws I could not cover with a black Sharpie
Not perfect but works for me.

If you are lucky like me and most of the pieces are sitting down with the speaker you have a chance of making this repair work.
If not, possibly use fiber board or balsam wood from an arts n crefts store to make the holes.
Or as I mentioned jam a set of speaker covers over the gaping holes.
Hope this helps.

I was thinking kind of proposing a similar way to put it back together, but using something like Flex Seal Adhesive to do it. Piecing it all back together from the backside of things.

The Chrysler OEM Accessory rear speakers came with a nice speaker grille pot metal housing, with the "grate" as a separate metal piece, with a thin layer of cork where it would touch the surround housing. Looked decent, but would need painting.

When I added a 2nd factory 6x9 to the '66 Newport after we got it in '67, the speaker came with the grille set-up. Didn't need it, just pulled the jute padding out by its pre-cut "slices" and attached the speaker to the metal package tray. The '66 package tray trim had the pattern on each side, but with only one speaker, the other place was still there. That extra rear speaker made a good radio sound even better.

Good repair,

They might have Mar-Hyde though, which is very similar.

Having painted this kind of material in the past, you'll need at least 3 coats for it to be even. Take your time so as not to distort the surface. Lots of drying time between coats.

After paint...the gaps are there but for a nice driver I am happy with it
