Stationwagon Tailgate

Buddy is working on a 69 Satellite wagon. Anyone know how to get the tailgate off? It drops down and swings out. He needs to get it off so he can do some metal work to the bottom.
Any help would be appreciated.

I think the only way to get it off is by taking out the hinge screws

If it is constructed like a Fury tail gate, removing from the door / tailgate hinge is possibly. When I've done them remove the inner trim pan first, remove the glass. Once this done on the inside I'd a torsion bar spring to assist in raising and lowering the tailgate. Bring the tailgate to a middle position this brings the torsion bar spring to a more or less neutral position. Otherwise when the bolts are removed from the retainer, it will snap. I got lucky, just scared the cap out of me.
