so im new to c bodies.... but i love them. i have a 1974 ny'er 440 4 door sedan with white vinyl top... itll start up super smooth and normal, but soon after itll start to run really rough and super rish... so rich that its puffing black smoke out the pipe... is my choke staying on? or something else?

Welcome to FCBO.
Glad you found us and you came to the right place.

That being said..........
How many miles on that tired ol engine.
And yes, start with the carburetor in general. Most likely time for a rebuild/replacement. Then you move on from there.

PIS! We love pics here.

its an original 32'000 mile car. and ill be posting more pics soon! and ive priced out a new carb setup... i guess ill go that route!

i want to put up some pics.... but idk how to post to the thread.... lol help!

My bet is on the choke pull off no longer working due to:

a) Vacuum line not being hooked up (may have bee knocked off, or cracked/ deteriorated) of not hooked up properly (to incorrect vacuum source, not allowing proper operation).
b) Diaphragm inside choke pull off cracked deteriorated. leading to same symptoms.

I had the air cleaner off my 74 once and had knocked off the line by accident, same symptoms you described. After I found the problem I felt really dumb, reconnected the line and have been fine since.

Start it up and take the top off the air cleaner, the answer lies within. Welcome to the board.

She's a beauty! More pics of interior and under the hood would be nice. A pic of the carb should help the techies here help you.

the interior is dirty lol.... full of parts. but i will take pics of both you mentioned!

Tex74,

That is a rare car...they stopped making the New Yorker Sedan in 75 and few remain. Most of the ones that remain are 4 dr hardtops.

Mr C, and the best part about it is the car is 100% original, even the vinyl top... no tears or scratches.

That's nice looking New Yorker, great find, if you do rebuild card and it is a thermoquad change the floats also or at least weigh them stuff soaks into plastic and they get heavy, causing bowls to full stalling etc. Your problem should be in choke system as everyone else already said. WELCOME
