Hi guys,
I need a starter motor for my 68 New Yorker,
I see Rock Auto have them as remanufactured

ACDELCO 3361044 {#19133813} Professional; Remanufactured Info
Unit Mfr: Chrysler; kW Rating 1.3; Offset Gear Reduction

Are these any good, is it correct for my car, i am in Australia so parts here are not easy to find.
I have purchased with Rock Auto before and found them excellent
Any information on Rock Auto starters would be great

Personally I would go with a new mini starter if your don't care about original appearance.

I have had good luck with them. Like any place you get a rebuilt anything from it is a crap shoot.

The mini-starter is OEM Chrysler on later models. available from several Chrysler parts re-sellers and even Mopar Performance (I believe). An accepted upgrade just as the old Mopar Performance Electronic Ignition Kit was.

What's wrong with your current starter? Might just need a new set of brushes and a polish of where they contact the armature? Might add a new starter drive while things are apart. Plus some new grease on the armature bushings, along with new bushings, too. No rocket science any more than a GM starter in their repairability.

Add a new starter relay, too? Plus the bulkhead connector for "the big red wire" that goes to the ignition switch, for general principles.

What you get as a reman unit might not look exactly like what you now have, fwiw.

Your judgment call,

I’d go with the mini starter as well and I’d like to think that Chrysler would have too had they developed sooner, it’s just a better part. My .02.

Perhaps, but I prefer the Flipper sound also . Therefore only big bulky ones for me too.

They aren't that hard to rebuild yourself and you have nothing to lose.

Chrysler Starter disassembly and refresh.

In my experience, the usual fault is the contact that the power wire bolts to wears out or the drive clutch breaks. You may have to search eBay for new parts, but they are out there.

The rebuilt from Rock Auto is probably as good as rebuilds can be these days. That's not a recommendation, just you will probably get a good one, but don't be real surprised if you don't.

I am a purists at heart yet open to any modern day improvements for the sake of reliability.
Both my 68 Newport and 73 Satellite wagon have mini starters.
Cheap, lightweight and readily availabe anywhere which is important to me since I do long distances with my cars.
The gear reduction sound ??
The sound of the engine running far outwieghs the few seconds of the starter motor IMHO.
At cruze nites and car shows, most people don't care about the starter unless they look for it or I point it out.
But the rest of the engine bay detracts the eye away from the mini-starter,LOL!!
If the starter was very obvious (say in a slant six car) then I would use the correct starter.

That wing, ding, ding, from a Mopar starter is a unique sound. Seems to turns heads and raise smiles on the older car show attendees.

That sound in a new, big starter, doesn't exist anymore. I've replaced two starters with original style starters; that sound is gone.

Big starters suck. Get a mini you wont regret it. Sure it's not correct but Leaburn is correct. A 50 year old car that starts on half a revolution and roars to life is more impressive to me then hearing the sound of an original starter.

I've had people walk up to me in the past and say "gosh I love the sound of the chrysler starters!" :realcrazy::realcrazy::realcrazy:

As long as it doesnt just go click click click, I dont care how it sounds. I care about how fast it starts the engine.

Guys, the OP wants an original starter.

How about helping him with that rather than going on about the toy starter that you guys like because you aren't strong enough to lift a real starter into place.

Starter lifting contest at Carlisle!

We did an engine block throw contest at a car show once. Didn't tell anyone what it was about, just had it on the flyer.

We had a big and small block categories too. We used lawn mower engine blocks, but no one knew it until we started the contest.

People are way too serious now. They don't get the jokes.

I was at a local air / car show. They had many contests, including the Hummer push. That Efer was heavy! Us five Mopar guys won the contest though.

Beats the hell out of transmission lifting at Carlisle. :drama:

I presume the transmission only went up, about 18-30 inches....?

I was thinking a little more challenging and enduring .... HOWEVER , I will tell your transmission story to anyone that will listen. Remarkable!

I know the mini starters just bolt right up but what about where the Battery cable bolts to. Any mods needed for that?
