I want to get going on more interior work. Do you guys have recommendations for carpet and sound dampening that you swear by? I recall Big John praising FatMat Rattle Trap, not sure if I want the 50mil or 80mil thickness. For carpet I saw stuff all over the web like stockinteriors and ebay

I also really do not want to wait an eternity for this stuff, as I've heard thats a possibility with interior items. Thanks

As for the carpet underlayment, the OEM stuff was usually sections of jute padding under the carpet (which usually had a thin flexible plastic coating on it, rather than bare yarn). Probably 3/8" thick jute?

Starting with the original DynoMat sound deadener/reducer, there have been many similar products of that nature since then. Even the spray-on Lizzard Skin ceramic-type coatings (inside or outside). Several brands/versions there, including one that Eastwood sells. These can be labor-intensive to install, but worth the effort if done correctly. Which means pushing the material INTO each recessed "bead" in the floor pan, firmly and all the way "in". No need to have any air space in which condensate might collect over time, I suspect. Might also ensure that no bare metal exists in the floor pan panels, repairing any accumulated rust that might be present FIRST.

It used to be that for molded automotive carpets, Auto Custom Carpet was the premier supplier. It was interesting to watch their trailer at the end of each day at Mopar Nats, when the YearONE van would drive up and load up. But that was 20 years ago. Not sure about now.

As for the carpet itself, make sure to match the type of pile in your car with what you find online. DO make sure it's molded in all areas, rather than sewn and hemmed. Might be good to attend some of the major car shows where the vendors are there and you can see what they have with your own eyes, comparing it to what you need for the car. Don't need to be Mopar-specific shows, either. Most have a calendar of where they'll have their wards on the manufacturers' midway at the events. See what's available from the different sources before you finalize the purchase, fwiw.

Happy shopping!

I recall using the FatmAt 80ml.
Works well at a better price than D-mat.

So I hear. Do you feel it’s too quiet or are you satisfied? I love some exhaust sound but don’t need the road noise
Well, I am happy that the road noise is less but I have a convertible so sound is everywhere
It does reduce the under body heat transfer from the engine and exhaust

Does anyone know if that mass backing that you can option on the back of the carpet cancels out the need for fatmat/dynomat etc?

I just put Siless 80 in mine and it made a huge difference. cheap...full butyl, easy to work with. I have no complaints about it. 36sqft did everything in the floor except a small section under the back seat on the drivers side. 40sqft would have been perfect. I order the mass backed ACC carpet from Rockauto for about $257 too. I also added 1/2" generic carpet padding to key areas trying to replicate the original locations of the jute. It all made so much of a difference I can have a normal conversation with the windows down at 65 and have a glasspack exhaust.

I think you have to understand that the sound deadening that is stuck down dampens the sheet metal "vibrations" from the road and exhaust. It doesn't really block any sound, it just stops or slows down the resonationing metal.

I used the heavier FatMat and I'm happy with it. I think it's a good product and a lot cheaper than something like DynoMat.

The factory undercoat acts as a "panel stiffener", which changes the resonant frequencies of the panels themselves. Same with the butyl rubber stick-on items on the inside or the spray-on Lizzard Skin product, which also has some ceramic content for better heat reflection/insulation, too.

The jute underlayments/attachments help with sound dampening and heat insulation, both. Our '69 Chevy pickup had some heavy rubber pads, topped with some smooth sheet foam for panel stiffening and sound reduction, with no jute under the carpet.

I've seen some people put a layer of bubble wrap between the jute and the new carpets they ordered. Seemed like a bit too much build thickness to me, but apparently works.

Just some thoughts and observations,

Thanks guys. In that case, I’ll go with the 80mil rattle trap and add the mass backing to the carpet I choose
