What is this spring?

My 68 Fury 318 has been having trouble with a stumble and sometimes the car dies when I’m just taking off. It runs great and starts fine otherwise. The guy I got the car off of said to check the vacuum advance on the distributor. I found that the vacuum line was very loose and stretched so I cut a bit off and reinstalled. When I was in there I found this spring laying to the r-r of the carb body on the intake. Can anyone tell me what this is and where it goes? Wondering if this is part of my problem also. It’s broken on one end. Thanks, D.J.

Looks like a throttle return spring, it will normally be attached to the carb linkage and an intake mounted bracket on the driver's side of the engine. Bracket is usually towards the front of the intake. Might make the car fail to idle down but would not cause a dead spot on take off issue. Sounds like the accelerator pump on that cab has failed. They do that a lot on today's moonshine blend gas because the ethanol eats up the leathers for the accelerator pump. With the engine off, see if you get a good squirt of fuel when you crack the throttle, you should be able to see fuel squirt about 1" down the carb throat as the throttle is opened. If you see little or no fuel, the accelerator pump has failed.

Thanks Dave, accelerator pump is definitely working great. There are actually two throttle return springs on the drivers side. I wonder if someone replaced it and couldn’t find one with the right tension so they used two, then left the old one laying on the intake. That’s my only guess. Thanks for the input man.

In that case, the dead spot might be weak spark. Check the points for excessive resistance and to be sure they are properly gaped. Also check the timing specs. Check the vacuum advance for leaks.

Awesome pics and great reference for refurbishing my engine compartment. Everything looks the same on mine. I really think it’s a broken spring that was replaced at some point and they didn’t discard it, they just laid it on the intake and forgot about it. Lol.

I know what you mean, When I restored mine, I found all sorts of spare parts and tools left on the intake and stuffed in the inner fenders. even cans of starting fluid jammed in places by the front side markers.
 
Lots of odd stuff gets left on top of engines over 52 years. In your case, it's probably a good sign, indicating nobody has been messing around under there causing mischief.

I've even heard of someone leaving a hammer under the intake on a big block car. :D
 
There SHOULD be double throttle return springs as a precaution in case one of them breaks. Otherwise your throttle would not return to idle and the engine would run away if the spring broke. Often you see one throttle spring nested inside of the other one, not attached separately.
