My son's car is a 1956 dodge (custom royal)?
We are trying to decipher what it was called. We have for a model name d63-3-4door.
The original owner said it had either a 331 or 354. But in 1976 the engine had head gasket problems. It sat 8 or 9 years when the motor was replaced. Now has a super red ram according to stickers on valve covers. It was originally purchased in Canada. From Neil Motors in Regina. Not sure if Canadian car had different motor options or not.
Body 802
Paint Code 3091
Trim Code JA0
VIN. 99022514

Neither of those engines was offered in a US produced '56 Dodge, super red ram was 315cid. '57 super red ram was 325 cid, '58 super red ram was a 350cid, '58 D-500 was a 361cid. US made 331 and 354 engines were both Hemis. 354 poly engine was offered in Canada I believe in Chryslers only for '57-58. 331 poly, also in Canada also in Chryslers for '56. Your best bet would be to locate the engine ID number to determine which you have. If the engine was replaced pretty much anything compatible with the powerflite could have been installed. To ad further confusion, the super red ram valve covers fit a variety of engines and the fact that an engine sports those covers does not necessarily mean that the engine is a super red ram. Poly engines were also produced in 277cid, 303cid, 313cid and 318cid over a variety of years. Part of the joy of finding and engine that "fits".

D-63-3 is the code for a '56 Custom Royal V8

Like already stated, a replacement engine could be anything. Recommend you take pictures of the engine and send them to this list. Maybe then we can tell you what it is - or is not.

Ok here are some pictures.

Appears to be a 315 4 bbl.
D633-86736

Looks like they replaced the engine with the same type it had to start with, or maybe they just rebuilt/repaired the old one. Block has some blue paint on it so it could be a rebuilt.

What color were the blocks back then?
You can't tell very well by the picture, but it's a light baby blue?

Mopar did not use that color in the 1950's. Most of the early poly engines were Mopar P4529148, aluminum silver which was the default color thru most of the 1950's for most engines.. The poly engines switched to red about 1962.

Agree. Most likely that is another 315 engine. Original factory color was silver, but if rebuilt or replaced with another engine which another owner had, original silver could have been painted over.

A lot of commercial rebuilds were painted a non-factory color to make ID easier in the event of a warranty claim. You know "We only paint our engines red, yours is green".

Ok well at least it seems to be matching year anyway.
Cool old car my kid found though. We got a very complete record of it. Original owners name, second and third owner, rebuilt in 84. Lot of history very solid car. Better shape than my 68 barracuda. Heck it's in better shape than a lot of cars from the 2000's
Motor seems to be seized anyway. We'll pour some diesel down the spark holes and see if we can free her up a wee bit. But we have a la block 318 from 72 that's been done a bit. If we can't get the old 315 going we'll get a la block conversion mount kit from butchescoolstuff.com

Definitely from an American Dodge Custom Royal.

The highest engine number for a Canadian Custom Royal D63-3 would be around 8000-C All Canadian-built engines had "-C" at the end from 1938 into the 1960's.
God morning bill i have a Canadian 58 chrysler windsor paint code XJX that im getting conflicting info on perhaps you can help?
