My car had a pertronix coil in it that failed after 10-15 thousand miles. Luckily I had an old one that my dad gave me in a box of old Mopar parts that he had in his garage.

My question is, is there a coil that you guys recommend? Everyone I talked to said to stay away from the crap they sell at auto zone and advance auto.
Thanks!

I run stock mopar coils on all of mine and they just about never fail. Auto Bone and Car Crap both sell Chicom coils and they are famous for overheating and shorting out. I would buy a wrecking yard coil before any China Crap. Pertronix coils are usually not that bad but you need to check the data sheet, some used a ballast resistor and some did not. If the ballast resistor type coil is used without the resistor, it will short out pretty quickly. A stock coil is more than adequate for anything except a serious race engine.

You aren't giving a lot of info here other than it was a Pertronix coil.

What ignition system are you using? Pertronix (I, II or III) , Mopar electronic, points or something else?

The primary resistance of the coil really has to work with what's there. Example; I use a 45011 Pertronix coil with a .6 ohm primary resistance with my Pertronix II in my Barracuda. The Pertronix II lets me run a lower resistance coil, which would give the capability of a "hotter" spark with a larger plug gap.

I no longer have the pertronix. I have a Mopar performance orange box.

So all you really need is a stock type coil. Usually you see "hi-performance" type coils for a Mopar ECU spec'd at 1.4 ohms primary resistance.

So, your choice... As Dave said, the local AutoZone sourced stuff is cheap offshore sourced junk, but then again, so is much of the "performance" ignition parts.

I've had good luck with the Pertronix brand, probably just as good as any of the others. The Accel coil on my Chrysler is still going strong after a bunch of years, but I suspect that it's old enough that it was probably built in the USA.

I'd probably buy an Accel, Pertronix or similar, staying away from the generic house brands that Summit and Jegs sell and then find a decent used or cheap coil to throw in the trunk when I travel.

What about getting one from the dealership? Are those any good?

No idea... But probably as good as anything else, but not any better.

I would be kind of surprised if they still list a coil though.

I suspect that if you walk in and ask for an ignition coil for your year of vehicle, they'll probably not have one in stock OR can order one as that part number probably went "NS1" (not serviced) a good while back. But (I have not looked to verify) there might still be some sort of ignition coil listed in the Mopar Performance catalog (which you can also download from that website)? Possibly Mancini might be a reliable source, too? Or Ehrenberg?

Just some thoughts,

I have the Standard BLUE STREAK coils that were discontinued several years ago....
They were the very best of anything stock for decades.....
If you would like one, always best to simply call me ---
