Hi everyone! I thought I’d share what I do when I’m not working my “day job,” or making fitful attempts at trying to get my ‘68 New Yorker back on the road. About 18 years ago I started learning how to create computer generated artwork. I’d always been into aviation art. Over time I learned how to create 3D models of planes and scenery.

Fast forward 14 years, and what began as a hobby turned into creating commissioned work for an author and a collector. The artwork was successful, and I began selling it through my website (www.johnmatthewsart.com).

I’ve attached some of my work here. Some finished, some just “doodles,” or studies for work I’m composing. Enjoy!

Safe skies!

-John

I'm using Solidworks at my day job and I can say: here's some serious surface modeling! Great work!
Regards
Mika
Thank you! I try to make everything look as realistic as possible, balancing that with the fact it’s all art, not technical drawings. I have a friend who works for Boeing and uses Solidworks. I’m using 3DS Max to model the planes, Photoshop to “paint” them, and another program to create the atmosphere and scenery. So, I go from blueprints, technical drawings, and reference photos to something that hopefully, once finished, looks like this...

Absolutely beautiful...and easy to forget how much powerful ordinance could be disbursed by such graceful aircraft.

Stunning artwork!:wideyed:

Thank you! In fact, one of the pieces I did was titled “Speed, Grace, and Power” for that very reason. Some of the vintage designs were just stunning to look at, if appreciated solely from an esthetic viewpoint. It’s easy to forget the purpose of the beautiful design was to deliver some pretty heavy ordinance on a target.

Very nice work. Have you done a B-1?
Thank you! No B-1s yet. It’s on “the list”. However, I’m working on it’s “grandpa” right now. These are images of the 3D model of a “C/D” variant of the “Stratosaurus” (haha!) I’m making now.

Let’s see your best B-17. My personal favorite aircraft of any era.

That’s on the list, too. About a year ago my son and I took a research trip to the Air Force Museum, and I did a detailed photo essay of the actual “Memphis Belle” B-17F, which is well displayed there. I hope to be able to create some work inspired by that plane in the not-too-distant future, along with some of my other WWII favorites.

Love the Tomcats/Bombcats. One of these days, when time presents, I may have to do that. Wish I had time do do all the planes I like, or that I get requests for. Sometimes things get sidetracked. I’m finishing up commissioned work for a veteran’s association, and everything else was put on hold until that was finished. I’m just now able to get back to some other work I had to set aside.

I just completed this profile of a McDonnell F-101B Voodoo. The plane is on display in a small park near a regional airport close to my house. One of hundreds of Voodoos built here in St. Louis and used to defend our country's airspace intercepting potentially hostile aircraft.

The other two images are illustrations I recently completed of a McDonnell-Douglas RF-4C Phantom II for a veterans memorial foundation in Meridian, MS. This Phantom was flown by the 186th Tactical Reconnaissance Group based at Key Field, MS. The veterans group commissioned me to create the artwork to raise funds for the restoration of the Phantom so they can display it in their memorial park.
