2021 Escalade

"I don’t consider myself a timid driver, but being behind the wheel of this 6,000-lb behemoth gave me high-grade, flop-sweat-inducing anxiety." ... "Words cannot describe how gargantuan the new Escalade is, so numbers will have to suffice. The 2021 Escalade is nearly 18 feet long bumper to bumper, and almost six-and-a-half feet tall."

That is enormous when compared to a Prius, Tesla, or smart car, which it sounds like this guy likely drives.

This may explain his super scary experience, look what else he has written about.

i think he has a valid point about the hood height esp when you see the 3 yr old in front.
im sure we've all had pets and little kids dart in front of our cars........

Thank goodness he is able to make a living as a journalist and not have to drive a truck to put food on the table. Large vehicles aren't for everybody. Neither are small vehicles. It all depends what you like, what your needs are and what you are comfortable with.

I started driving at 16 in a 66 Chrysler, so size doesn’t bother me.....then or now. He should try a ‘73 Imperial at about 235 inches long=19.6 feet long with NO hand holding items like back-up cameras, adaptive cruise control, accident avoidance, cross path section, etc. He’d probably crash it in the first 3 minutes.

To be fair to the guy, the last of the big cars was in 1979, 41 years ago when these folk weren't born.

It wouldn't take him long to get used to "the way it used to be" he's likely not a car guy and knows/cares little of earlier eras.

All that aside, how much larger can these vehicles go???

But then again, Suburbans and pickups were certainly not small in his lifetime.

I agree about the blind spot. Here is a pic at taken at the elevation of my eyes in my Durango. There is 18" of room between it and my Challenger. The Escalade is considerably taller.

Although passenger cars have been downsized since the late 1970s, the #1 vehicles sold in this country are the F150, Ram, Silverados. SUVs like Expeditions and Suburbans are popular because they are the size of mid 70s station wagons. I get that there are people who have only been in Civics and Neons, this guy is just a chickenshit. Get in a truck and drive it.

Then turn him loose on a Jersey rd. He will be thoroughly skilled in a week

Another poor soul that grew up with mini vans and front drive four bangers. Hell, I took a few of these fellas from work for a ride in my Hemi Charger. It scared the crap out of them when it chirped the tires. They also thought “drifting” was a big deal. Hell I called it “leaving the high school parking lot”!

He'd pass out driving my '69. 18'8" long, 6'7" wide and no rollover protection! No stability control! No anti lock brakes! :drama: Oh the horror of it all!
