Pulled my gas tank yesterday. I had a leaks from bad hoses which I replaced. Trunk floor has a lot of seam sealer on it, so it's hard to tell the condition from above. I figured, winter is my chance to see if there are rust holes in the top of the tank and see the trunk from from below. Then do what repair/paint work is needed.
Question: how are the air vent pipes sealed to the gas tank? Are they welded in? Is there any way that fuel could leak around them?
Trunk Pan much better than expected

Thanks, Ben

One of mine was dead loose and leaking. They're "swedged" in place, not welded, which is why they can loosen up.

Solution?
First, don't go rotating a loose nipple just for the sake of rotating it, as you'll loose the orientation within the tank.
Second, clean the nipple and the tank to bare metal.
Third, https://www.jbweld.com/product/tankweld This stuff is fantastic.

Thanks for the info, Trace!
Spent a few hours on tank today. I guess I'm on step 3 of your plan. Need to buy tank weld.

Fuel Tank is super clean inside.

That all looks great, and it was probably a messy, dusty bunch of work for ya.

I believe Tank Weld is available at most of the chain auto stores. I think I got mine at O'Reilly's.

Be advised that this stuff sets damn fast, so don't play with your balls for very long.

Fwiw I got maybe 4-5yrs out of that tank sealer stuff before it started seeping in my Coronet when we added a sump to the oem tank.
