Hello all, just got my car back from having some things done, one was the distributor cap was replaced. I picked it up after work so when I drove it away I couldn’t ask the mechanic abut the issues that were present when I started up the car. As I drove it down the road there was conciserable a mount of sputtering, no power, almost felt like it was going to stall. I believed it could be a timing issue or a vacuum issue but upon further inspection I noticed this piece which is bolted to the block next to the coil, between the coil and the distributor. It’s the size of a “C” battery and only has a 3” wire with a ring terminal at the end of it. Before I call the mechanic back and have to limp it back to the shop, can anyone let me know what this is and if it could possibly be the reason for the “misfiring” issue I am having? Thanks in advance!!!

That is the capacitor that helps prevent ignition noise when playing your AM radio. It has nothing to do with your problem.

Find a new mechanic. There's guys on the board in Connecticut that can point you towards someone that can do the work.

What was the reason the car was in the shop? Just curious.

Just bought the car over the summer. Mechanic was doing the hoses, belts, distributor cap, fuel sending unit, etc. “Basic” stuff I don’t have the time to look into now. Want to get the cars mechanical stuff taken car if so I can do what I’d like to do to it over the winter... Dynamat, electrical, lights, etc.

He’s a really good guy, owns many classics himself, and I do trust him. He did notice the issue and if it weren’t for the fact he works out of a small 3 car garage and needed my car out of there he would have kept it. He is still working on it... he’s not done doing a few things. I don’t want my convertible seeing any rain/water so when it is forecast to rain, I take it out of there so he can get other cars into his garage if needed. I’m sure it’s something small that he will figure out next week. Thanks all!

Points or electronic ignition?
