Bad start and backfiring upon hitting gas

I recently adjusted my electric choke on a four-barrel Edelbroch carb (weber body) and think I did something wrong. It was extremely difficult to start compared to normal start ups. More problematic, however, is than when I step on the gas quickly it sputters and backfires through the carburetor. What did I screw up?

Sounds like accelerator pump/linkage, does it shoot gas down the carb w car off?? Pics needed

not sure if this is the problem but the choke plate needs to be about a 1/4" open when cold. if it's shut all the way it will be too rich.

Sounds like the choke isn't working at all now.

It's either just way out adjustment, or possibly the spring inside the housing popped out of the lever that operates the choke flapper.

There's probably some videos on YouTube that explain how that choke system works and how to set it.

I'll take some pictures- but I agree there is something fishy about the gas delivery because it wouldn't even fire while cranking the engine like there was no fuel.

Is the choke closed or open after setting the choke with the gas pedal?

Today it started on the first try so makes me wonder about the gas bowl potentially having gone dry and that was the cause of my difficult start yesterday.

Here's a picture of the choke plate. I think the throttle cable is actually hitting the choke return arm on the opposite side but to fix it I need to re-route the cable slightly.

I need to let it cool down so I can try adjusting again. After I went for a drive it stalled on a hard take-off, likely because it is too rich and the plate is not opening like it's supposed to.

Yeah, fix that cable, it looks like it's rubbing. Start it up and see if the choke slowly opens. It should while running. Check what the closed spec is, that seems tight

Tech support from Edelbrock said "a credit card" gap for the choke. I'll fix the linkage and watch the choke slowly open- hopefully the problem will be fixed!
