I picked up the wagon back in October in Denver with the intent of it being my daily driver.

She managed the 3-hr drive home alright enough but after doing some tests found 2 cylinders has some major compression issues, so currently motor is out for a substantial rebuild.

I hope it's a 360 like the one in my same colored 73 coupe. VERY cool car you have sir with excellent taste in wheel/tire combo.

She’s got a 400 with the compression bumped up up to just shy of 10:1.

Wheel/tire combo is courtesy of the previous owner but I agree-it really complements the rest of the wagon.
 
My dad one exactly like your 73 .I drove it to high school my senior year was great for loading up my friends we would skip out of school for lunch at a Burger Chef that was about 4 miles from school we would eat in then drive back to school then sneak back into the parking lot unnoticed. Our wagon had a 400 engine and was a 9 passenger except it had a roof rack was the last wagon my dad owned.

Figured I'd share a few pictures from last month when I pulled the 400 out and how the rebuild is looking thus far.

Motor has been substantially reworked: Upped the compression, switched to aluminum heads & will be fitted with a Sniper EFI system to aid in driveability since she'll be my daily driver when finished

Finally finished sprucing up the tank and drilling provisions for the EFI. Should be ready for a reinstall in the next day or so

Motor is in!

Was an absolute pain to manage to position the headers as the motor was lowered in & getting the block to line up with the trans, but nothing got too dinged up.

Here's the motor build out:
— Calculated/theoretical 500HP/TQ @ 750ft & 400HP/TQ @ 7,000ft (my elevation)
—9.87:1 CR
— 0 decked block
— KB240 pistons: .030" over
— Factory cast crank & factory rods w/ 7/16" ARP fasteners
— Edelbrock E-Street heads - 75CC
— Hughes performance flat tappet lifters
— Hughes performance cam: SEH2832BL-10
— Hedman 73080 long tube headers
— PRW Stainless Steel adjustable rockers
— Edelbrock performer intake
— Holley Sniper EFI

Now that everything is running, I’ve had time to get around to addressing the minor cosmetic issues regarding the bumper assembly and grill.

Having a bunch of old epoxy paint laying around I elected to paint the bumper support, license plate bracket and back of the bumper for some corrosion resistance and peace of mind since they were all pretty rusty.

The new bumper assembly & grill came from fellow forum member migsBIG.

Congrats so far, everything is coming along very nicely! I also know the feeling of eventually finding a better bumper to replace the bent one on my 72 wagon, what a relief! Keep up the great work, thanks for taking the time to share pictures and write things up!
 
Been scrubbing the wagon down and found the broadcast sheet when I pulled the rear seat to vacuum it out. Figured I'd share it.

Upgraded to LEDs after being inspired by the results others members have had with them.

They illuminate the enclosures far better and, personally, prefer how they look when flashing.

I searched the part number for those headers and the only result that came back was a link to this build thread. I'm wondering if it is off by a digit?

You’re right, it’s Typo I didn’t catch. Correct number is 78030

I'll take some better photos of the final install & fit and upload them in a day or two
 
Here the final install photo I promised and a few shots of the headers and how they fit in the tight spots.

OE heads the plugs aren’t too much of an issue but angled plugs require a bit of creatively (and denting/dimpling for clearance around plug 6

Thats tight for sure. Seems like the biggest cars might have more room. Are you able to put them on with torsion bars and motor in place?
 
They’ll require lifting the motor a good deal or pulling the torsion bars to put in unfortunately.

I personally laid them in the bay before dropping the motor in and they didn’t get too dinged up in the process
 
I just noticed this build thread, and I am loving the progress so far. Keep it up! In fact here is a little something to try and maybe keep you motivated....

Great to see another wagon, nevertheless a 73 on the forum. These year wagons are kind of getting hard to come by, in my time i been into c-bodies which is not too long probably 3 maybe 4 years I only seen 3. Which one is yours and the others were green.

I see in your first post you wanna use the car as a daily driver, that is cool and I am all for it BUT please tell me you are NOT gonna use it in the winter months? Just FYI if you do, I highly suggest rust proofing the frame in some way as 73's LOVE to rot. The wagon above which is my stepfathers, that car has an all new frame in it because it was rotted out. That was not so easy to find either.

Keep up the great work, I am looking forward to seeing more progress soon.
