What weight oil are you using in your imperial?

Not a Imperial, but I have service records back to new for my 67 383. It's had preminum 10w40 every 3000 miles since the first oil change at 1000 miles. I've been using Valvoline 10W40 "hi-mileage" in the two oil changes I've done. The car had 86K miles when I got it, now has 87500 plus miles.

I use 10W-40 Penngrade1 oil (formally Brad Penn, formally Kendall). It's a partial synthetic, high zinc, high phosphorus oil. Works fine for me. The amount of zinc is probably a bit of overkill because I don't have the heavy, cam killing, valve springs, but some zinc is needed in any flat tappet engine.

It really just comes down to using a good oil with enough zinc, changing it regularly and using a good filter. All else is just what name brand makes you feel warm and fuzzy.

BTW, according to my oldest son, who was in oil sales for a few years, most of the non synthetic oils are containing higher percentages of used oils these days. That's not a bad thing, believe it or not... It takes less refining for used oil than it does for crude. The end product is generally considered to be better too.

I run 10W-40 Castrol GTX hi-mileage synthetic in all my old Mopars, and straight 30W non-detergent dino oil in my '54 Hudson, as it has no oil filter and has never had one.

Used to run Valvoline, but have been running Castrol for about ten years.

My current oil regiment is Valvoline Maxlife 10w30 w/ Lucas Zinc additive. Oil change intervals of 3000 miles.

I run the Valvoline 15-40 "All Fleet" oils in mine. The off the shelf zinc additives have an annoying habit of dropping out of solution and collecting at the bottom of the pan on engines that sit over the winter, not a good thing.

I didn't know off the shelf zinc separated out with time..

A consideration . . . if the zddp add-in additive might tend to "settle-out" of the oil, when the engine might be dormant for a period of time, guess where it might settle to? The bottom of the oil pan. Where's the engine oil pump's pickup screen located? FWIW

Happy Holidays!
