My muffler, that is. The car backfired, neighbor came running out in some kind of "tactical stance", ready for battle.

My oval muffler is now round. Can't seem to find a replacement listing online. I think it's maybe 25" long plus collars, 2 1/4 pipes, offset inlet, center outlet. "Standard replacement" is fine. Anyone know a manufacturer/ part number? 1970 300, 440, single exhaust.

Just in case.....my '59 Imperial did that but expanded two mufflers. We found that the "condenser" went bad and was replaced. If your car has points keep that in mind. That happened about six years ago and not acted up since.

My mufflers were replaced by my local custom exhaust shop.

Just the normal C-body muffler that's been around for ages. Should be something like from '65 to at least '73 and possibly to '78? You can graft in a "Street Hemi" muffler, which was on the '69 Polara 440/375 cars, 1969 only. It's a bit shorter so a short length of pipe would be needed.

RockAuto can be your friend to see what's still around, as NAPA also carried Walker Exhaust items. Might also consider replacing the rear tail pipe at the same time? I like bolt-in exhaust items that might be done in one's driveway, without welding, my self.

Had to look for the '69 Polara 440 dual exhaust application to find anything at RockAuto. The shorter muffler. Also in the "INFO" pages, brought up a graphic from the Walker Exhaust catalog of the complete system. SoundFX Direct Fit 18230, with "INFO" page 2 having the size/configuration specs. Pricing was less than $30.00 each. Possibly NAPA still has the complete Walker Exhaust catlog available to them?

I've never heard of that before, does a plug(s) spark when an exhaust valve is open and ignite the un-burned gas?

Walker has a good site, you can input the dimensions you want and see if they make what you need. I was able to find almost exact, just a 2-1/2 outlet as opposed to the OEM 2-1/4.

You’re basically pumping the exhaust full of fumes then if/when you get a spark kaboom! I blew the mufflers off my 68 Fury convertible at a gas station like this. So bad the lady made us push it to a dirt lot to figure it out. It was a broken ballast resistor. Got it going again with a wiggle test.

The kids used to do this with the shop truck. D500 w a 340 transplant. They’d cut the ignition in gear 3spd I think and let it coast in gear while pumping the gas pedal. Key on - scare the hell out of everyone. Great fun till they blew the muffler up. It was one of those huge truck ones. Paul got his last check that day...

My brother and I did that with a 64 Ford wagon, blew the piss out of it!

This is harder than it looks-

Napa has no old books, only a computer with no exhaust parts.
Rock auto has no muffler listing by application.
Midas wants the car to come in, and they will build a custom system. (For probably $1000).

When they say length "overall", is that the "body" dimension, or is it the body and two couplings dimension? Couplings might add 6" to the body dimension?

I'll call Walker and speak to a human.
