Gonna be fixing a leak soon, I thought I read you have to drop the rear axle on these, is that true? I hope not

Sorry but you usually do. If you can get the axle as far away from the body you might get lucky and only have to pull the brake drum off but that is not likely. Start soaking the rear spring hanger bolts with a good penetrating product.

I found the easiest way is to un bolt the spring hangers and move the axle assembly forward. Jack the body up as high as you can and it should come out. Slide the tank towards the front of the car not straight down. Of course the wagons I've done this on were CA, AZ cars so rusty bolts were not a problem. Good luck.

Can you see the condition of the rubber gas line hose that connects to the sending unit? Those hoses deteriorate especially with today’s gas. Replace with fuel injection rated hose. If this is your problem you can replace the hose without dropping the axle and with dropping the tank down on top of the axle to allow enough access.

The sending unit and rubber line is on the front of the tank so it's visible by removing the splash shield if it isn't already missing.

Wonder if the leak is on the bottom? Could it be fixed in place?
The leak is when I fill to a little under half, it drips from somewhere above I replaced the sending unit earlier. That's the first thing I checked, and not coming from there yes, I do have rust:(

I managed to get the tank out of my 66 wagon without removing the rear spring hangar. it has a little bit of moving the thing around and spraying rust penetrant to get it past the quarter panel, I also used a prybar to gently spread the the bottom of the quarter away.
Also, the tank was going to get plastic coated, so i wasn't super concerned about a few minor scrapes on the tank itself.
This was in 2009, so I cant tell the details, only that it is possible. Good luck.
