I'm hoping to track down and buy back my 1965 Plymouth Fury III coupe. It was sold on eBay around 2007-08 and I have found it twice since it sold, but it has eluded me both times.

It was located in the Buffalo, NY area and the winning bidder was in Atlanta, GA. From what I recall, the buyer owned/operated a Mercedes dealership and when the car showed up, he was pretty disappointed with the condition. From there, it sat in the back lot until one of the mechanics bought it from him.

I don't have too many photos, but I do remember a lot of quirky things about it that may help if anyone on here knows of it or has it in their possession. I'm trying to see if anyone else in the family has the VIN or additional photos as well.

I believe it was a 318 car and certainly had a column shift automatic transmission. Dark green exterior, green interior, and a black vinyl roof. The side moldings also had a black insert/paint, which I know isn't on most of the ones I've seen out there. The radiator had a gnarly leak and wasn't replaced before it was sold. The side mirror was square, assuming a later replacement to the original circular mirror.

When it was sold, the fender skirts were off and in the trunk. The horn didn't work so someone rigged up a bypass by zip tying a doorbell button to the steering column. It had a crappy aftermarket radio and the speedometer was unplugged/didn't work. One of the front fenders got bumped many years ago and the repair wasn't too bad, but I distinctly remember there was some wonkiness with the chrome trim at the front of the fender when the repair was made. The small piece may have been missing entirely, not too sure. I think the sticker you're seeing on the front windshield was for the NY State Magistrates.

Do you still have the VIN. I am retired from the NYPD auto Crime Division. We were able to do searches that would show the location of the car if it was registered. If the car was unregistered for more than I believe 5 years in some states they dropped it from the files. Some motor vehicles used to do the searches. I don't know if it is still allowed I would check DMV and your local PD I would not call I would show up bring the pictures and tell them that the car has sentimental value and you would like to purchase it back. An offer to buy lunch would not hurt. Some agencies are reluctant to give out info but it is worth a try. Good Luck

That is some solid advice, thanks for your insight! Unfortunately, I cannot track down the floppy disk (I know...) of images I did take of the car, which I think had a photo of the VIN. I've asked other family members who were associated with the car to scour their files and see if they have anything like that too.

Worst comes to worst you can go to DMV and ask for a history of the vehicles that were registered to you or go to the insurance provider and see if they still have the info on file. you should be able to track the vin down

Good idea on the insurance route to track down the VIN too. Thanks a lot!

Tried that once & they looked at me like I had 2 heads. They said that it was illegal & were very stern about it.

Later found out they changed the laws 1994ish. Think it was due to lawsuits, rogue cops were looking up info for devious purposes like finding women to follow. Believe also that any time one looks up the info it is tracked & on record to ensure it is only for official business.
