I bought this truck new and at 136k the cam and roller lifters started emitting a loud chirp at idle. After some online research this appears to be a frequent problem in this era Hemi. My local mechanic tore it apart and sure enough the rollers in the lifters were shot/wobbly. A new Cam and lifters were sourced but the Cam bearings are said to be not replaceable and "do not under any circumstance try and replace them". Does anyone have relevant experience with this?

I suggest you send a PM to member @Dobalovr who is or was (?) A mopar dealer in Alberta and with many years experience can advise you as he certainly sold some trucks like yours. Graham will see you right with advice and suggestions.

Good luck with your Ram.

I work in a 16 bay shop.
We had seen several of truck with this issue.
Most customers trade it in as the cost to repair was not feasible.
A couple cases we did quote an engine replacement depending on how severe the damage is with misfiring, engine noises, etc .

I did a 13 Ram a few months back, the customer had a aftermarket warranty. They wouldn't pay for Mopar parts. He settled for the E-Bay kit the warranty company would pay for. I replaced the cam, lifters and gaskets for the swap. No cam bearings. When all assembled, oil and coolant it sounded good.

What kind of oil have you been using? What are your oil change intervals?

Change the oil myself, Mobil one synthetic every 10k. Any idea why cam bearings can't be replaced?

I never needed to change them, so I have never checked into it. I would think a machine shop could do them if needed.

Strange warranty not to pay for genuine quality parts.

After much research, it looks like the Cam and lifter failure is a frequent issue for many owners of late model Hemi vehicles. YouTube videos abound on the cause and possible fixes (or not), but in the end it looks like an extended warranty followed to the letter on dealer inspections is necessary for the next truck purchase. Changing oil as recommended using a high quality oil and filter doesn't guarantee a long engine life. Can't wait to stick the warranty companies with a engine rebuild after calling my cellphone once a week for the last 5 years :icon_fU:.
