Hi All,

I have a original nice running 1965 413 engine that I am going to put in my 65 NYer wagon. It is a bit dirty has 80K miles but runs smooth and quiet. Here is what I was going to do:

head gaskets
rear seal
timing chain/gears
new oil pump
pan gasket
timing gear cover gasket
freeze out plugs
all externals--dist, carb, water pump
valve cover gasket

Any advice about other things to do while I have it pulled out is appreciated.

Looks like you got it covered pretty well. Just don't paint it red. . .:poke:

Are head gaskets something you would typically replace as part of an engine refresh if there's no problem with them? I've read at least somewhere that since they've had years and years to settle in that there's wisdom in leaving them be if they're currently fine. I dunno tho....please correct me if I'm wrong!

Get the correct rear seal. They seem to be difficult to find. I found some in Australia but I was in a hurry and used aftermarket. It did not hold.

440 source has a nice rear seal kit for big blocks. Get their billet aluminum retainer also. Also, you'll probably be going to thicker head gaskets as the originals were around .010 thick. You'll lose some compression with the newer felpro type.

I have not had good luck with the poly seals on a knurled crankshaft. Both times the seal let go after a couple of hours of freeway driving. They held fine for weeks in town and short highway jaunts.

I finally just pulled my factory motor and swapped in a later one. The original motor runs great but I am going to go thru it mainly so I can have the knurling removed.

Might just be me but that was after one rope seal and two poly seals.

I used the Viton seal in my 383...no leaks! I offset it 3/8 inch on both sides. Come to think of it...I think I got the billet rear main seal retainer from Mancini, not 440 source.
