New to me 78 NYB on its way but please Don't tell my wife

Left to do:

charge A/C.... after I replace bad compressor front seal
Install new choke busted in disassembly of engine.
Install trunk weatherstripping.
Check all fluids.
Clean clean clean
Detail engine compartment
Wash
Wax
Shake down
Adjust
Enjoy....

Trunk weatherstrip in.

Very little tape required to hold while it set up. Hint: follow the directions. Apply both sides and let get tacky. Then bravely stick. You get one shot at it.

been using this stuff for years. The black is better than the yellow IMO. Both will work. I think factory used yellow.

Choke thermostat in and wired in correctly.

Love the 1978 Waterfall grill the best!

Need advice Today:

Changed the high pressure outlet gasket on the compressor and vacuumed out the system to 27ish pounds of vacuum. Held it for about an hour with no loss so I vacuumed for another hour or so.

Satisfied the system was holding vacuum and that any humidity in it was boiled out of it, I started filling.

System sucked the first 12 oz almost completely. Before the compressor kicked on

Compressor came on right after the first 12 oz. However, the air was going to the floor and was warm. I goosed the throttle to pick up some vacuum in the system and it switched the air to the top vents.

So far so good.

Continued filling up to 36 oz of freon where it should have started cooling. At lease some

Nothing.

Suction on the low end of compressor was -12 inches and high side was just under 100lbs

Actual block of expansion valve was really cold but the lines to it were both warm.

High side which is usually untouchably hot was not so hot I couldn't keep my hand on it. And, by the second coil of the condenser it was just warm.

I think I may have a bad expansion valve stuck open.

Opinions? Advice?

Maybe a blockage just before the compressor. That you're sucking vacuum on the low side is telling.

When charging the low side, you should be keeping the can tap up so as to only get compressible vapor. You may have hydrolocked the compressor with liquid refrigerant or oil...

My best solution, at this point, I'd see what happens when you return to the car... to some extent, the gases will "settle" into the low areas and she may work just fine. If not, you can purge the system and try again... have to be careful about this when adding large amounts of oil or refrigerant into the low side. Initial charging with liquid should be done through the high side with the compressor off as should machine charging.

Closed expansion valve would cause pressure to build if the compressor had supply... do you still have an EPR valve? I never quite understood the need, but it would add another location for trouble.

No EPR valve.

I put in a temp sensor cut off switch on the evaporator to keep it from freezing up.

No liquid went directly into the compressor that I know of. The first can went in with the vacuum I put into the system. That probably did suck in some liquid. But the engine was off and compressor was not turning.

Let me check it this morning to see if it has “settled”.

If any liquid did go into the turning compressor it may have bent or broken the reed valves on the compression side but then I wouldn’t get as good a suction as I’m getting.

Where did you source the weathersriping? Thanks,

Put in a Sanden. Seriously.
You WILL thank me.

No. You wont listen to me... :BangHead:

If the compressor crapped the bed, I just might. Send me a link to your retrofit please. Getting a little tired of the vibration.....

Not feeling it for the original style pinstripe. Too 70’s garish for my taste. Perhaps a more tasteful double thin stripe like what was on the trunk.
