Now is the time to trade in or sell your car it seems. We had a 2018 Durango GT that was nearing the end of the warranty period. Carvana was going to buy it outright for $36K. Well we only paid $38K for it. I wound up trading it in on a new car and with the sales tax savings we got the equivalent to about $37,500. Plus the deal on the new car was good. I am pleading the 5th on what I bought so I don't get flamed for being practical.

It's the same story here, especially with the older trucks and SUVs. I know a guy who sold his '97 F-250 for $30K :wideyed: last year. It's a nice truck but damn, it's not that nice, at least not to me.

For real. A buddy has a used car lot that usually has about 30 cars and trucks in stock, specializing in 2000-2016 vehicles, as they are the affordable and decent vehicles most can afford. He does NO in-house financing, so he is not one of those "buy here, pay here" lots at all. He tries to keep the $2,500 - $5,000 choices available, but lately, he can't find decent cars at auction like he used to. So, most everything is $6K and up to $25K. The market, plus all that "free" stimmy money out there, is driving everything up (inflation in action, Econ 101). On Sunday, I saw 3/4" plywood at HD for $104.00/sheet. I about stroked out when I saw that.

Speaking of food service jobs, all the local restaurants are hiring, but few are applying. Most all of the jobs used to require previous experience in nearly all positions, but they are willing to train folks from the ground up now who can barely recognize a salad fork. Makes me think twice about eating almost anywhere I don't normally patronize and know.

Far as new goes, I'll never buy a new vehicle ever again. If a guy has $40K to put down, he still is financing $20K to $50K on top of that! There is not a new vehicle out there worth spending $60K - $80K or more on, and having a $900/month (or higher!) car payment on for 84 to 96 months. Can't forget insurance, at possibly the same amount or more, depending on your situation. The height of absurdity.

I've been kicking around the idea of buying something new. The Mercury is still doing well, but its also eleven years old and I can't discount that...

But ... I have no freaking idea what to buy...

Ummm I heard on the Gordon Deal show that Hertz and all other rentals dumped they're surplus cars on the market (millions) 'cuz of COVID and are now restocking but finding a shortage as something about a shortage of 'chips' for the new cars. Could that be the result of someone pissing off China?

(edit) Should be a up & coming 'Hail Sale' of cars in Texas...

My wife's '08 Buick Enclave has nearly 179K on it. Naturally, the trans went tits-up on it with 160K on the odo, about six months after I bought it . After $4,200 later, I got a 3/36 reman trans from GM. She doesn't put a bunch of miles on that, so we'll hang onto it until it burns up or dies. I don't want a car payment when I retire for good. The plan is my '14 VW Passat TDi is the last car I'll ever have a car payment with. Bought that with 53K miles, it just turned 78K on the way to work this morning.

Hertz declared bankruptcy a while ago. Doubt they'll be a player for anything. Who give three shits if Chy-nah is pisssed? Plus, "hail sales" are the norm wherever beachball sized hail hits.

I have downgraded my search to used, older Challenger R/T 6 speeds.
Been tracking prices from the whole country and some people are demanding $20k for a 100,000+ mile specimen. It is absolutely nuts.

3/4" 4x8's are heading to a hundred bucks a sheet.
Keep printing that money, Mr Biden, so that Olive Garden and McDonald's can't find help at 15 bucks an hour because they are still getting $600 a week unemployment A YEAR AFTER THE PANDEMIC STARTED!
:bs_flag:

I'll just live vicariously through Bob's Redeye...

In November my 2010 Plum RT was rear ended and totaled. 74000 miles, bought new, paid off 5 years prior, expected another 20 years from the car. Insurance payoff was between 17 & 18. We had to replace it, no choice but it came with a payment that effects our plan.

Word.

I feel bad cause the restaurants are hurting, but a lot of staff looks like circus people.
Nothing new here mate, obviously you haven't watched the Gordon Ramsey's TV series 'Kitchen Nightmares'.
Try the UK episodes where they don't bleep out the F-bombs.

A friend of mine owns a restaurant on the North Fork of long Island. He cannot get anyone back to work. The unemployment plus $300 everyone is happy just sitting on their ***. He is now offering $ 25.00 an hour plus tips. This is an expensive place while dinner for 4 runs about $300.00 bucks so the tips are high. I am retired and have no experience waiting on tables but this is pretty tempting.
