I have a question about the two-piece valve that is bolted to the power steering box in my 1969 New Yorker. It's leaking at the joint between the main valve and the additional piece that mounts on the front of it.
I know that if you remove the entire valve from the steering box, you have to mark it carefully so it can back go back on in the exact same spot. The item I'm pointing at with a screwdriver in the picture, though, is what I have to remove. The main portion of the valve can remain where it is.
Can I remove only this one portion? It appears to be held on to the main valve by two bolts, so I'm guessing all I have to do is remove them. Is there any sort of spring or sensitive mechanism that's going to pop free if I just take off this one piece? Is there anything in particular I should look out for? Also, the head of one of the bolts appears to have been flattened out for some reason. I'll have to re-shape it before it can be removed. Was this done deliberately when the steering gear was manufactured? I doubt it, but I thought I'd ask.
Thanks in advance for any and all advisement.
