If you are running the old electro-mechanical voltage regulator---get rid of it!
Go to Autozone and plug n play the this electronic regulator...
It is the stud with black wire at 7/16's nut back of alternator.

Disconnect coil wire.
Mark the timing mark on balancer so it can be easily visible
Remove driver side valve cover (5 --7/16" bolts)
I agree get a timing light AND vacuum gauge.
BTW,are you running ignition points?? or Electronic ignition?

The wagon has a 122" wheel base so I looked up a cable for a 68 Fury.
Raybestos 92298 is 91.8 inches long and available from Rock Auto
