    440 Cylinder Issue

Thanks for your input. The two cylinders show scoring on the thrust / intake side. I will be pulling those pistons looking for ring issues or something off.

    440 Cylinder Issue

Very good info and much appreciated. I will pull the heads and check the pistons and other related parts. The thrust side is where I see the wear. Thanks

    440 Cylinder Issue

Additional info This motor came in a car that I bought and I haven’t tried to run it yet. It looks like it’s been in the car a long time but isn’t original to my car. It’s hard to turn by hand and with the starter, but has loosened up some since I primed it with oil. It feels like it’s...

    Tight Thrust Bearing, Why ?

Hello Yes the rods all have similar side play and I pulled one rod bearing and it looks good. I can’t read the number on the crank but maybe you’ll know what it is.

    Tight Thrust Bearing, Why ?

Hello It’s not the original engine for my car and I have no history for it. The pad is unreadable, it has 440 on the side and a late 71 date. I’m sending a pic of the crank, maybe that will allow someone to identify if it forged or not. The engine has been pre oiled and the cylinders also...

    Tight Thrust Bearing, Why ?

There was no end play before removing , the cap with bearing was a pain to get out it is so tight. Engine still turns stiff with top bearing still installed. Engine is in the car. The recess is a bigger diameter than the bearing so that’s not the issue I’m thinking. I would like to remove...

    Tight Thrust Bearing, Why ?

Hello Obviously I’m not a motor guru. My 72 440 is new to me so I don’t know it’s history, just trying to get it running. It’s been very stiff to turn by hand and has not been started yet. I started pulling main caps looking for a spun bearings. The center bearing is tight where the thrust...

440 No Oil in Top End

Follow up! I have struck oil finally! After many crank revolutions and a wire stuck down through #4 holes on both heads I could line up the passages. Now I have to check the main bearings to see if there is a spun bearing causing a tight rotation.

440 No Oil in Top End

No recent signs of engine work. Rocker shafts are removed so I’m looking for oil to come up from #4 cam bearing. Valley pan removed, oil is coming up around the lifters, No stuck valves. Thanks

440 No Oil in Top End

I slowly rotated the motor by hand with a wire stuck through the head until it dropped into the cam. Still no oil up top.

440 No Oil in Top End

Hello I have a 72 440 and can’t get oil to the rockers on either side. I removed the oil pressure sender and it pours oil when pump is spun with a drill. I’ve run a wire through the head and into the cam after rotating to line up the holes. The motor turns hard by hand. Could it have a spun...
