How necessary is brake swedging for these hubs+drums?

Might as well at that point I reckon. Mind you, had the rear drums still been swaged on, I too would have popped the $125 or so for the bit. I don't appreciate swaging drums.....

How necessary is brake swedging for these hubs+drums?

One Item, universally found in all the de-swaging threads I've seen: A drill press with the drum WELL stabilized is necessary to the job. Both the tungsten carbide cutting bits on the tool, and the drum itself require perfect lateral stability to prevent ruining the drum and breaking the...

How necessary is brake swedging for these hubs+drums?

Swaging brake drums to the studs was originally done at the behest of the U.$. Armed Forces by the Big Three during WW2. Chrysler Corp, catering heavily to the Pentagon long after 1945, maintained that tradition, along with left hand threading the left hand side wheel studs. As a Private...

I Feel So Stupid...Idler Arm Removal

Use the tool David Hill showed. I have one, and it works well. You can find idler arm specific tools on eBay if you look in the "vintage" tools. Modern crap seldom is cast of decent stuff.

    TRW power steering pump

Good! Yes, you MUST replace that seal when replacing the rest of the stuff.

    TRW power steering pump

I love mine too. Without a press you can't do much with these pumps, be sure. I have a nice old 20 ton one made in South Carolina about 80 yrs ago. You either will have to get a press, or hire a shop. A worn shaft bodes ill for long term, but maybe, if you do a total rebuild, leaking can be...

Power Steering: Not As You Know It!

There are plenty electric power steering pumps on the market actually. I've meditated on using one myself, just as I like electric water pumps, fans, and oil pumps. By all means, using electric accessories certainly frees up power to deliver to the drivetrain, at the price of depending more on...

    TRW power steering pump

TRW pumps get replaced because some folks don't care for the way they run actually. Also, parts for Saginaw pumps still can be had, and Saginaw pumps still are made for after market buyers. I LOVE TRW pumps myself, and if you don't want to tinker with what you have, I'll buy it from you. See...

    Sway bar bushing help

Look on Rock Auto for the sway bar bushings. Mevotech makes good rubber. The link bushings have become more problematic. I suggest eBay. Glad I horded mine up a few yrs ago! Mevotech MK7061 Mevotech Supreme Sway Bar Bushings | Summit Racing You can try some of the modern options too, esp...

Leaf Springs - Would you do it yourself?

Points taken. Only someone with a forge or big oven could re-temper spring steel. I used Monroe's coil-over "Load levelers" on Mathilda before putting the new stuff on her. The old leaves don't look original, FWTW, and certainly are better than the poor stuff I took off Gertrude when I got...

I does if the old metal doesn't snap worth a damn. Spend $0 for that.

Leaf Springs - Would you do it yourself?

Commendable zeal in the effort, but unless you re-temper those leaf springs, you still will be using "tired steel." Steel loses elasticity over time as metallic crystal re-aligns into harder, yet more brittle configurations. While such is desirable for certain uses of cast iron as an...

Where so i find cheap socket for upper ball joints on my '65 new yorker?

The WORST FAILING of the Quicksteer is that its 1/32" too small in diameter! Typical asian DANGEROUS CRAP! This thing will REMAIN LOOSE IN THE CONTROL ARM! You will not get to put 125 ft-lbs of torque on it. It will bottom in easy, then spin in the hole in your control arm. I'd say the...

Leaf Springs - Would you do it yourself?

I put the front wheels up on ramps, use the floor jack and stands on the rear, and do things pretty much identically to how you do. I have several impact wrenches, though when removing the springs from Gertrude, even those didn't avail at first! I had to use a long cheater pipe and my 3/4"...

    Upper Ball Joint Replacement

CLean out that control arm but GOOD! Check the threads on the new BJ. Make sure you have the control arm securely mounted somewhere BESIDES ON THE CAR when you commence torquing it down. I use a big long length of 1 " pipe and pass it through the holes which will later house the upper control...

Leaf Springs - Would you do it yourself?

You can adjust the front ride height a fair bit BUT, keep in mind the CASTER of the front assemblies! Caster defines the angle made with the axis between the top and bottom ball joints off the vertical, and you want plenty of it to make a stable ride.

The ride and handling markedly improved when I upgraded the springs and bushings on Gertrude too.

Leaf Springs - Would you do it yourself?

It's absurdly easy and well worth doing. Go to Springs n Things. Spring and Suspension Specialists | ESPO Springs n Things You can order them with a little extra height, or less too. I ordered a new set for our '66, then swapped those into the '68 we got as a replacement when it got totaled...
