1977 Mopar V-8: Did ALL 1977's have LEAN BURN, or just the ones with 4bbl carbs?

Thanks for writing up your first-hand experience! This is invaluable information! Do you happen to remember some concrete issues with the 1974 Formals caused by poor quality because of cost cutting that were absent from the preceding Fuselage C-body cars? So a 1974 B-body was the better buy...

1977 Mopar V-8: Did ALL 1977's have LEAN BURN, or just the ones with 4bbl carbs?

Exactly when did these problems with the Formals start? Right from their introduction in October 1973 or only later, when catalytic converters and then Lean Burn were introduced?

Question About D32 vs D34 on Fender Tags.

The broadcast sheet for a 1977 Town & Country without Trailer-Towing Package has: Trans D34 = "Std Duty A/Trans" Trans D36 = "A727 A/Trans" That explains why D34 and D36 can be used indiscriminately on fender tags. D36 specifies D34. Then we come to the part numbers in the broadcast sheet...

Question About D32 vs D34 on Fender Tags.

Up to the end of C-body production the transmission codes seen on fender tags are: D34: Belvidere 1972-1975, East Jefferson 1972-1975 and 1977-1978, Newark 1972-1974 D36: Belvidere 1976-1977, East Jefferson 1976 As a consequence, in 1977 Chrysler tags can have two codes: Belvidere-built...

After some homework on the 1973 and 1974 AMA Plymouth Fury Specs a list with differences between the two years emerged. Here are some highlights: - as far as emission controls is concerned, the 49-state 360-2 had no air pump and an EGR valve only in 1974. And this: Crankcase Emission Control...

Actually we are both right. In 1971 Chrysler and GM published gross and net ratings:225 hp (gross) = 175 hp (net). Only Ford did not do this and stuck with gross for 1971. This may convince you: https://www.hamtramck-historical.com/images/dealerships/FleetBook/1971/71_Fleet_Gross_Net_HP_Ratings.jpg

Just found an interesting note in the 1972 AMA Plymouth Fury Specs. Regarding the ratings for the 400-2 and 440-4 engines it says: "With California emission package subtract 9 horsepower and 5 lb. ft. torque." The Californian emission package consisted of an air pump and floor jet exhaust...

Those AMA specs could keep me off the streets for quite a while. Trailing the web, I found the 1971 and 1972 Plymouth Fury specs. The others will have to be collected in a time-consuming manner. For the moment I can serve with some cam specs. years camshaft nr. lift in/ex duration in/ex...

If it's more a question of (ill-advised) marketing strategy than of measuring then, yes, what are we talking about?! Inflating the 1974-75 figures made the later drop-off look all the more dramatic. On a more general note, advertised engine ratings are mentioned in almost every motoring...

Thank you for these detailed comments! Maybe I did not understand every aspect of it, but that's my problem. So we should get away from the idea that the AIR and EGR affect the power ratings negatively. And the power-robbing effect of the catalyst would be only mild. So far, so good. Lower...

I do not quite get it. Same certificate, valid for 1974 and 1975, yet for 1975 with a significant change in the set-up of the exhaust system. I can see only two possible explanations for this contradiction. Either the converter was considered a running change under a valid certificate, or the...

That's interesting. That would mean that the 1974 engine was already fitted with a catalyst. All the more amazing how that was accompanied by an uptick in the ratings! So the Chrysler emissions hardware was not the performance killer, it were the ever more tighter emission standards?

I got the 1971 figures from LA - Chrysler small block V8 engines, where it says: "The initial power ratings [for the 360] were 255 hp and 360 lb-ft, gross, or 175 hp and 285 lb-ft of torque net ..." I wrote the net figures in the table for easier comparison. @traintech55: If the 1974...

    Looking at the yearly power and torque ratings of stock 360-2 engines (E57) I was surprised to see that they peaked in 1974-1975: year power torque 1971 175@4000 285@2400 1972 175@4000 285@2400 1973 170@4000 285@2400 1974 180@4000 290@2400 1975 180@4000 290@2400 1976 170@4000...
