Relationship between production date code, sequence number ('67 Polara / Monaco)

As the VIN is by definition a unique identifier, the assembly plant needs to be included in the code. Imagine issuing company-wide VINs spanning several assemblies. Quite an accounting hassle! For that reason the VIN includes a code for the assembly. Messaging on the fender tag, that does not...

Did Elwood Engel design these cars too??

What counts as the first-to-market formal full-size? The newly-designed 1974 C-bodies or the updated 1973 Chevrolet and Ford? The Chevy kept its fuselage sides right up to the end, just like the Ford did with its coke bottle sides.

Did Elwood Engel design these cars too??

But where is Engel when it comes to the Formals? Those are generally not mentioned for their outstanding design and Engel doesn't get any particular credit for it. At least, very little is said about it. This leaves me scratching my head a bit, because to me the Formals do very well in enacting...

Did Elwood Engel design these cars too??

The sides aside, the 1964 Thunderbird headlamp region seems to me not so much Engel-like, who preferred the encounter of clearly defined rectangles. Actually, on the 1964 Thunderbird the visual emphasis is drawn away from the the corners toward the center, not unlike what Exner did on the 1961...

One is free to speculate, but the down-to-earth information available up until now says that this was a car like thousands others: - 360 ci engine, nothing particular for late 1974 Brougham production. (That's what I meant with "K-car"); - no known special codes on the fender tag or the...

The 4th position in the SPN reads 5 according to the broadcast sheet. For the 3rd position there is a hole. It is correct that according to the 1974 Sales Brochure and Dealership Data Book the 360 engine was not available on the Brougham. However, at some point during the production year that...

So I screwed up that example big time! Luckily, I found another picture of a 1974 Belvidere VIN that overshoots the 257720 mark:

The basic information is from @Bill Watson. Those figures do not contradict info I've seen in other sources, printed or online.

The (blurry) fender tag pic allows for alternative SPN readings at positions 3 and 4. The mix-up at position 2 is mine; sorry! 3rd position: 3 or 8 4th position: 5 or 6 That makes for four possible alternatives. A focused pic of the fender tag or the partial broadcast sheet will sort this out.

Yes, looking again at the fender tag pic the SPN starts off with 25.... rather than 26.... Not sure about 3 vs. 8 in the third position though. Let's see that partial broadcast sheet!

The DP41K4D258661 VIN also is a living example of the difference between total cars produced and highest VIN assigned. The Belvidere 1974 production numbers are: 091,368 Fury 058,158 Monaco 008,194 Town & Country --------- 157,720 100000 + 157,720 would have made 257720 the highest VIN, if all...

Is there a source on special meanings in the Vehicle Order Number? The MMC Detroit site has something, but code 903 is not mentioned.

On this 1974 CHP Monaco, yes. Also seen on 1974 Fury cop cars from Belvidere, for instance, here.

    Production data

Still, there is a difference between the Ward's and CA data, and that difference is located in the non-US market production numbers: 25,137 CA 24,835 Ward's ------- 302 If the total 1973 Fury production numbers for Newark (136,405) and Belvidere (143,925) are hewn in stone, those 302 cars must...

Crunching some numbers reveals that Ward's and Collective Automobile (CA) are on the same page, somehow. Ward's US market totals for the 1973 Fury series: 12,896 Fury I 18,604 Fury II 128,991 Fury III 30,811 Fury Gran Sedan/Coupe 47,924 Station Wagons 16,269...

Wait a minute! 255,495 is also the total for a break-down by $100 price groups. A note to that table says it is based on North American car production aimed at the US market. So 2) would be the total excluding Canada and Export, not 3). In a post two years ago, @Bill Watson also said that...

Reading through Ward’s Automotive Yearbook 1974 I get three different totals for 1973 Fury production: 1) 280,330 (136,405 Newark + 143,925 Belvidere, "US car production") 2) 255,495 (broken down by series and engine type, "US car production") 3) 250,055 (broken down in percentages by...

That’s what I’m trying to say in the Wyoming Ave plant thread. The most trusted sources have this: 1973 Plymouth Fury total production: 280,330 (Ward’s Automotive Yearbook 1974) 280,630 (Encyclopedia of American Cars/Standard Catalog of Chrysler, cited from Collectible Automobile) The...
