    Bad Timing Cover Bolts...

Thanks Big J! these look fricking great. Exactly what I need. I will look into a set of these with a long shaft so I don't have to remove the waterpump/timing cover to get to the holes. I had no idea these things existed.

Here's a better link for a fine ss bolt kit that fits 273 318 340 360 small blocks: MOPAR SMALL BLOCK SB 273 318 340 360 STAINLESS STEEL ENGINE HEX BOLT KIT | Alloy Boltz found the grade 8 arp type kit in a flurry and didn't check price. Ouch! This one's 304 stainless and has bolts for more...

    Bad Timing Cover Bolts...

Man. That is some great info. Thanks for taking the time to explain torque values and application for me to better understand. And, good to be reminded that even a screwed up hole has a heli coil waiting somewhere to come in and make it all good. I've never used a heli-coil but have heard of...

    Bad Timing Cover Bolts...

Well. I don't have a great photo to show all the bolts that wouldn't go in all the way but this is the best I can do- my Plymouth is stored a long ways from where I live...This is the best I can do- you can see the nut spacer on the one bolt there. There are at least three others that I had to...

    Bad Timing Cover Bolts...

OK, so they (Chrysler) didn't machine the block so that the end of the hole is tapered or anything? Just a straight, threaded hole? I rarely use a torque wrench for anything- I have that Craftsman torque wrench that I bought years ago to tighten down a cylinder head on a Honda YEARS ago...

    Bad Timing Cover Bolts...

Well, I did call it a day w/ the cam bolt- it's in there and I feel pretty good about it after checking w/ my 3/8" ratchet. You are right. My big torque wrench only goes down to 55. I kinda eyeballed what I thought would be 35. So steer clear of the Craftsman 1/2" wrench for the lower torque...

    Bad Timing Cover Bolts...

Yes, 35 ft.lb. was hard to walk away from w/ what the Craftsman said was 35. Especially considering the mayhem that would ensue if that thing were to back off. but I did put my 3/8 ratchet on it to see if it were indeed tight and it was. It just didn't take much at all w/ the long, giant...

    Bad Timing Cover Bolts...

I recently replaced my timing chain and when I went to install the timing cover I realized my bolts all seemed too long- I'd had everything pulled apart for about a year before re-installing the cover again. Some of the bolt ends did look a little rough... I was scrambling with the gasket...

    Timing chain cover question

well then, maybe not a '73. I will look again at the imprint but am pretty sure there was nothing before the "M". Too, according to the manual you quoted it looks like my build date would be 06 13 (doesn't make sense? Here's the number: M318R 06 13 1947. I'll get a photo. Too...

    Timing chain cover question

yea I don't think the 1283 is a date stamp based on what you've been able to pull up here. Too, my intake is red- which I couldn't remember for sure whether or not I swapped out of my original '68 but now am convinced I did. Too, the '73 quote was just what I can remember but it's been a...

    Timing chain cover question

the color does appear to be lighter blue- maybe turquoise. I'm glad you have already spelled "turquoise" there above for me to copy!

    Timing chain cover question

I feel pretty good about the stamp on the driver side front (if you're referring to the one behind the power steering pump) especially since it was on a smooth, surfaced area: "M318R 06 131947" What it means I don't know. Dave Lux mentioned the alphabetic system starting in '65. If that is...

    Timing chain cover question

well, there you go. A '68 with a date stamp. So much for the youtube guy. I believe you thought the 1283 on my block was just a casting number. Maybe it is indeed a '68 without a stamp. As I clean the block the mopar blue color is starting to show through. Wonder if the '68 blocks...

Maybe it is a January 2, 1983 motor?

    Timing chain cover question

wow, I find that incredible. I bought that motor from a junk yard and I thought the guy told me it was from a wrecked '73. It's been so long I can't remember for sure. Maybe he told me it was from an '83. I do remember something with the intake manifold not working with my '68 linkage and...

see my photos above. "1283" is cast on Both sides of the block.

    Timing chain cover question

Dave, my imprint has an "M" preceding the 318- that would be 1983 by the system you mentioned. Could it be that the 1283 on the block is in fact the date- a Dec. 1983 block??
